Virtual Cockpit as base for real Cockpit
-
What I want to estimate is, if I can take data of the virtual cockpit (converted into 3D format), scale it and use it as a base for the construction of a real cockpit. Is it possible to convert in some way or make it visual in CAD-Software? What software is needed? Who I have to ask for permisson to use the data? Is the virtual cockpit close to the real F-16 pit or are there major difference?
Thanks in advance.

Zwingli

I’ve considered doing this to build an ACES II seat…using the texture templates from a 3D model to make aluminum flat patterns from. Less hassle if you just buy a commercial model which has a clear license agreement; I like this one for the ACES II -

You’d need a 3D modelling package - and a fairly expensive one like Solidworks or AutoCAD - depending on just how the objects you’re interested in are modeled; I’m not certain that you could build up a 3D model from a 2D image straight out of BMS, but there is software out there that will do that sort of thing…I just can’t recall a specific package just now.
The software used also has to accommodate the model format, and there are some free ones - like Sketchup. I prefer Blender - far more powerful, and can do a bit more than you’d think for this sort of purpose even though it’s not really meant as an engineering tool.

Go have a look at this site if you are interested in building a F-16 cockpit. You will be in good company with folks who’ve done it already and others just starting.

Glad to help. If you have Solidworks already you’re several steps ahead of me…!
If you are looking for commercial 3D models the places to look are places that cater to general 3D animation stock/props for both professionals and hobbyists. That’s how I learned most of what I know about 3D models and how they get built; by using programs like Poser and Bryce for animating…I have a personal recording studio and at one time I wanted to do sound for film (I know…I have way too many hobbies…) and figured I’d do some animation to do that vice using live actors. Never did, but learned a bit of tech along the way.
