Ghost MIGs
-
hey, we struggled with this for a while today in multiplayer. at first everything seemed fine, but our leading edge escort package got popped by a bunch of ghostly MIGs, where AWACS kept calling them as less than 5 miles away at co-altitude but they were invisible. unfortunately, whatever sort of invisibility cloak they were using didn’t effect the corporeal nature of the missiles, which made short work of our escort as these things go. next we decided to fly a straight sweep, figuring that perhaps we were as good as we thought we were and it was some sort of bug. right on both counts i’d guess, considering the next flight we got ACMIs of and the enemy missiles simply appeared out of thin air; we had about 4 planes looking at the leading edge as they got jumped by MIG-23 but never detected a single radar contact, save them of course. the ACMI confirms that the enemy were simply not there, the missiles appeared out of thin air
it may be a connection bandwidth problem, i’ll give it some further testing tomorrow. doesn’t seem to happen in SP.
tl;dr you’ll probably need the players to connect with bandwidth 512+ considering if they are lower the planes simply might not exist.
link to relevant ACMI https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/23718048/TAPE0000.vhs observe R-13R appearing from nowhere about ten seconds in.
spooky Halloween MIGs confirmed.

This(similar) happened to me yesterday. I was up for SP flight, running some ACMI and a 29 spike close(and I mean danger close) but no missile. I continued a defensive flight to homeplate. Look at ACMI tapes…no 29.

host all units on ?
and yeah 512 is absolute minimum… host shall have clients × 512 upload capability as a minimum.
host all units is prefered of course else a weak client could gost a flight and therefore not updating it correctly…
-
we’ll test it tomorrow, in 4.32 we regularly ran 256 on all clients with no issue, but no complaints here because there’s obviously a lot more going on in the shiny new game.
the weird thing is that some of the clients had 512 and they were just as invisible, including me (the host), i was several times within 1 mile at co-alt and had no vis whatsoever. there may be follow-on effects of having one client too low though, we’ll give it another shot tomorrow as 512+ on all clients, i have the bandwidth so no big deal.
oh and what do you mean ‘host all units’? if it’s not on by default probably not then; i haven’t turned anything like that off, though.
if it’s some sort of function that loads more units on the server instead of distributing it (does it do that in falcon?) i can turn it on as the machine i’m using can probably handle it.
never heard of that function though. maybe i’ve been doing it wrong the whole time.

your issues look like clients not having proprer port forwarding
dont forget to do it for all clients since exe has changed signature for routers and firewalls

I think I hit this over the weekend as well. Both times I was hosting the campaign on my local machine and flying w/ 2 friends. Bandwidth was set to 512 and I have a 5Mbps uplink. Here’s what I observed:
- First flight, invisible ground units / structures. We targetted a nuke plant, only to arrive and find no structures of any kind. RWR spikes from a SA-15 made us curious, so I flew down low to investigate. They fired on me (saw missile + trail), but I never saw the actual truck.
- Later flight (the next day) we got an AWACS call danger close (BRAA effectively put the bogey on our 6, 2 miles out), but there was nothing there.
I didn’t really do anything special to host the campaign. All I did was connect to myself and start a new iron fortress campaign.

Hi there, digging up this thread sorry. We(FFW01)'ve been trying to fly MP on 4.33. Last week the host had several mb/s (fiber connection), tonight I was hosting (35mb/s upload), all clients were at 512kb/s minimum.
Both times, we had some issues with ghost bandits. All allies were visible on the fcr, all bandits (23s, 29s) were invisible. Chalis gave some info about the picture but impossible to sort anything at these posits. Later on the ACMI, no bandit appears, no info about some fox1/2/3, just the loss of our planes.
Sams behave strangely too: active on the HAD for one of our guys, inactive from the other wingmen’s point of view, nothing on the rwr while the SA are launching some missiles.
We all fly on the same version (4.33 without mods), we never had these kind of trouble on 4.32.7.
Host all unit is on
Did we miss anything?

Tried 1024 bandwith? Server seems to have enough upload for 30 clients.
-
Ports open for all clients? And 512 is way too low, must be 1024 least for clients in campaings , and maybe host should disable head position sending etc in cfg file.

Thanks for your answers, we’ll try that on next week. Yeah, server is ok, I stupidely admitted that since the Manual says 512, then it has to be ok. We have not thought about differences between TEs and Campaign.
Well, thanks for the tips!
