Question about the BMS Key File Editor.
-
I have a issue with this new editor. I got my HOTAS setup in a few minutes but my keyboard keys are now porked. I only have the command menus that work with key presses. I have been staring at this thing and the manuals for hours now and I am at a loss. How can the devices work but most all the keyboard key are now unassigned?
-
Same boat. I guess we have to redo our Hotas setup from scratch.

What are you using for devices? I have CH fighterstick/pro throttle/pro pedals w/trackIR.
The more I look at this the more I am starting to think the tool is not working correctly. I am getting ok feedback everywhere in the tool but when I past the output into the key file and load it up in the falcon UI the keypresses are 99% unassigned. Whats is strange is the HOTAS seems to be set up???

I gave an answer in another thread.

I for one, would like to know why all the HOTAS commands aren’t listed immediately at the top of the keyfile.
Seems rather foolish to put the few callbacks that the vast majority of BMS users will want, buried halfway inside a lengthy keyfile instead of right at the top where people can easily setup their controls and start flying.
-
I think this is a matter of user preference.
But it is not possible to make everyone happy. Sorry. If you don’t like the sorting just open your key file with an editor.
Copy / paste the content you need to the beginning of the file.
A couple of clicks, 60 seconds, done. -
User preference? What percentage of BMS users do you think fly with just a HOTAS and mouse, versus those who need every callback in the cockpit?
I’d place money that the most user-friendly option would be placing the HOTAS commands right at the start.

Maybe you are right.
I will think about that and maybe something can be done in U1.
Stick, Throttle, L&R MFDs …
What else? -
If you’re actually willing to change it, then I think the HOTAS, followed by MFD’s and maybe the View/Sim commands would cover pretty much everything for most users. Then the rest of the pit stuff as you already have it.
Without digging too deeply, I think that sequence would be the most beneficial for the most number of people.

Copy,
thanks for your input.I remember there was also a complain about the sorting in the dev forum a while back.
But as it was just one I left it as is.But I perfectly understand what you mean and, yes, I consider changing that detail.
But as it is a bit of work (editor / dev editor / key files / prinouts) it will not happen before U1.Feel free do leave other suggestions or remarks here.
Thanks.

Id argue in counter to that, and I would suggest that the goal of BMS is not to be as user friendly as possible in the first place. The controls are not optimized for HOTAS’ in general - they are optimized for a specific model HOTAS, with modification, and assuming a cockpit.
If anything I would say that changing the order based on frequency of use, would make less sense than the current order of where in the cockpit everything is.
But - perhaps that is a user preference of mine.

There’s no need to redo the Warthog HOTAS from scratch.
Just read the manual.
Or…you can do something simpler: copy your line commands and paste them at the BMS-full.key file.
Search where the keyboard commands end and paste it instead of all the rest.
Just save it under a different name.
When you’ll load it within BMS all key commands shall be back to 4.33 full as they should.
Don’t forget to check if your callbacks are still relevant (most are).
If you’re still having issues just ask and I’ll give you my file to fly with until you sort it out.As for how Kolbe made the new file…
I completely understand where he’s going and why.
He’s trying to ease and automate everything to a degree that you don’t have to mess with almost anything but just assign > copy > paste.
It’s different logically from the way the old file worked but…as someone wrote regarding 4.33…there are so many changes that had been made that even the veterans shall have to sit down and read the manuals.I think that the new generator’s file concept is more suitable for future development and to draw in new members.
But…hey…that’s just my personal opinion. -
Sorry haven’t used it yet but it’s an excel file, right?
Well in excel u can short the list in just a few clicks. And if u don’t want to fubar the file just make a copy of it and sort it as u like oh and to save kolbe 's time finalize the sort and post a link to help others.
Then we can criticize u for your editing and sorting skills. -
When you import a file.key that you previously edited and save…i see where you have the option to show the import callback but is the a way to quickly include them into the editor column or do you have to start from scratch each time you want to edit and build onto a previously made profile? If so how?
