Tips for Maverick Boresight Align on the Ground
-
I’m looking for advice on aligning the Mavericks on the ground. I’m having two issues with this procedure.
-
First that it takes ~15min to get the TGP up and running leaving me ~5min to align the missiles and get to the end of the runway.
-
Second and more troublesome, that I cannot get the TGP to point track a landmark while I’m on the ground. I can point track other aircraft but they’re rarely stationary, especially 15min into the mission. This has kept me from ever successfully aligning on the ground, even when ignoring the takeoff time.
For now I’m aligning in the air, but any tips that would help me get this out of the way before I takeoff are appreciated.

Best tip I can give you is to do it in the air.
Honestly, once you’ve done it a few times it becomes second nature and you can do it during ingress on a building in a town or installation in no time at all, without any delay. You can even plan your Steerpoint 3 or 4 so that it is co-located with such to make it even easier.
Whilst it is possible on the ground, it’s less reliable (due to terrain/elevation issues I believe but don’t quote me on that). Your best bet is to boresight on another aircraft, like your wingman, if you can get him to stay still.

Thanks Dark, that’s what I was thinking as well. Wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something in the ground process.

Check the F-16 checklists starting on page 5/14
2. Boresight procedure is possible on the ground when GND JETT switch is placed in ENABLE position (an master arm set to SIM)

Is it possible to do on your wingman?
-
That is the best way while on ground for now at least

In rl, Mavericks are mainly aligned on the ground, when on leak area next to the runway. Time there should be +15 minutes after engine start so you should have about 5 minutes before TO, the TGP should be already powered-up (if you activated it at the proper time: after SEC & EPU checks and together with the rest avionics power / radar switches), Maverick weapon page should come on again at that point if you have powered-up Mavericks through SMS at the proper time (early after avionics powers have been activated). Parking on the leak area is normally looking towards center of the airbase (in Kunsan is actually looking towards away from airbase) so to have many object-options to track and boresight Mavericks through TGP (handsoff), as and be far away in distance so to properly work. No valid point to track your wingman 50 meters away and wait for a successful alignment…
Main problem is (Falcon limitation) that the TGP on the ground cannot be moved and track items above line-of-horizon, thus you are extremely limited to find and track proper objects / structures.
PS: FLIR boresight is also performed at this point in the leak area and looking to airbase internal, but currently system warm-up period is wrong and no matter how fast you are after start-up, you’ll find the system on and yourself able to perform the FLIR boresight on the air.

Raptor. That is RL stuff. Nice to know of course but ,we are talking about how you can easily boresight on the ground in BMS. BMS boresighting dose not take into account distance.

Speaking of RL stuff, I thought the arming area at EOR was supposed to be away from the airbase, so that if a missile is armed and fires, it wont hit the base… wouldn’t facing the base kind of mess with that?

There is a small hill of sand in front of the leak/arming area where the planes are looking exactly for this situation. But you can find trackable objects to perform the boresight in the background.

In RL the prefers mode for boresighting especially on the ground i8s VIS mode. For the time being, handdoff in VIS mode is not implemented.

Fixed in 4.33 AFIK.
BTW on a related topic, my number 1 beef with online fliers, trying to rush the ramp start to get airborne.

Actually, I was responding to Raptor saying that Kunsan was the exception to the rule…
The EOR at Kunsan is fixed in 4.33, which is awesome. I would have liked to see it in perhaps a little higher resolution, but just facing the right way is a great start

Kunsan was the exception to the rule
I do not believe the Kunsan is a special exception to something. Perhaps the airbases that host aircraft equipped with suce special devices (FLIR, TGP-Mavericks) in need of boresight calibration on the ground prion to take off, they have migrated their infrastructure (EOR & leak check points, tarmark marking etc) to assist crews performing these tasks.
For example, you can see LGSA airport tarmark here that is used by HAF 340sq for such purposes, as and LGBL here for the 347sq. These sq’s both use LANTIRN/FLIR/TGP/Mavericks.
So, even if BMS code was updated to allow proper ground boresights, the Kunsan ground infrastructure should be “altered” by human-crews to assist on these tasks (look to the internal of the base on the EOR).
