Night Vision Goggles vs. FLIR
-
Hello,
What is the advantage of having a FLIR on the HUD when you have night vision goggles?
Thank you

NVIS magnifies the amount of received photons from various natural sources.
FLIR IR detector detects energy in the 8- to 12-micron region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This wavelength region is not visible to the human eye.Unlike night vision goggles, IR detectors can see in total darkness.NVIS compatible F16’s use the combination of both FLIR and NVIS therefore taking advantage of both systems.

Older F16’s had worse NVG than FLIR, so they had FLIR in the hud. Newer blocks have good enough NVG to not need FLIR in the hud.

Not true to every word of this sentence.

In the past, all NVG were clumsy, cumbersome and not very useful for combat flight, but they were used anyway.
these days, they are better, cheaper and lighter, making them more widespread.however, FLIR pods are still very expensive as they also Include TFR. so they were bought in smaller quantities for “night squadrons”, so not everyone can fly with those all the time.

Thank you for the feedback. For the NVG, I have to turn down all the lighting knobs including the MFD’s. Is this how it is done on the real F16 or is there some sort of switch that would adjust the lighting for NVG? I heard something about a Blackout Switch but not clear on how that works or if we even have it in BMS.

The black out switch is on the bottom of the throttle on latest blocks only, it is called HOBOS and is not implemented in bms.

Check this, I am sure you’ll going to love it, although in Greek language.

Yes, this is what you would have to do in RL unless you have a cockpit equipped with NVG lighting - not all Blocks/variants are NVG lighted, so it may also depend on which model you have selected.

Well aside from RL, are there any advantages in BMS for using FLIR?
Im just curious, i really like it but im not sure where or if i should use it instead (or maybe as addition) to NVGs.Maybe im just testing the wrong things but for now i couldnt find any difference on the picture i get from FLIR in the HUD compared to the NVGs.

Well , this is just me but i really like to simulate 80-92 timeframe so i dont use nvg because those were rare back then and if avaible, quality was not good as in BMS now.
My favorite mission was Night noe strike in Janes F-15E back in 90’s and it was just flir in hud.
So maybe flir dont have any advantage against BMS nvg least until some older nvg is simulated.
But i hope that molnis new 80’s mod will have only flir

Yeah, there doesn’t seem to be any difference between the two views at the moment. There should be since FLIR is by definition an infrared image, so we should see hot objects standing out. In other words the view through the HUD should be similar to the current TGP view with either BHOT or WHOT image.
That would be the whole advantage of the FLIR view - detecting hot spots that may be buildings / vehicles etc, that wouldn’t normally stand out in a pure NVG (image intensified) image…

IMO, on that area (NVGs), DCS has a better rendering.
When wearing NVGs IRL, you can hardly read flight instruments (optics are focused to infinite).
On the example below, the blur effect is exaggerated, but the idea is there:
… and also, can’t read MFDs through the NVGs (must look below the goggles) …
…
EDIT:
Forgot to add: NVGs should be unusable at dawn/dusk.
