Bore sighting AGM 65 maverick stations and TGP handoff
-
Hi folks,
I put together a quick video, this morning, to help my squad mates in the 56th VFW to learn how to bore sight (align) the maverick stations to the targeting pod or ground radar. Figured I’d pass it along in case anyone needs help with this procedure. It takes some practice to become proficient at it, but makes using the mavericks in BMS 4.33 a whole lot easier.
The 28-step procedure is described on 163-167 of the TO-BMS1F-16CM-34-1-1.pdf in the /docs/ folder

…this is all for MAVG, correct?
-
D & G should be same procedure. I think A & B models as well if it’s possible at all to MBC handoff with them.

This was most helpful… thank you for making and posting this video…

As it turns out, all the steps involving the laser are not necessary. The mavericks can be handed off with the TGP laser on, or off, and in training mode or combat mode. I put together another small video. In three minutes, I bore sight the mavericks, and then fire off 6 in one pass by using TGP handoff.
The voice-over didn’t record, but here’s a list of what I did on those 3 minutes,
Air to Ground Master Mode
Targeting Pod in Air to Ground Mode Right MFD
SMS Page, and Power on the Mavericks
Putting Targeting Page back on the right MFD
Left MFD page, WPN mnemonic, wait for mavericks to time out
Uncage, missile step, uncage, missile step
DMS left putting FCR on left MFD
Going to Snowplow mode, range 20 miles, TMS forward and slew cursor to left targets
Fine tune the ground radar so the targeting pod is looking toward some buildings
put the maverick weapon page on the left MFD
Switch sensor of interest to targeting pod, go area track
Go narrow field of view, find an easy to identify building, go point track on it
Quickly switch sensor of interest to the maverick weapon page, and slew the maverick before the hand-off fails.
Roll the aircraft so TD box and maverick circle are visible in the HUD to be sure the maverick is looking at the same building as the targeting pod, and the box and circle coincide
TMS forward to lock the maverick on the building, then hit the BSGT mnemonic on the maverick page
Missile step to switch maverick stations, slew the maverick to the targeting pod box, tms forward to lock the maverick on the building, and then hit the boresight button again.
TMS-aft to break the maverick lock, missile step to switch stations, and TMS-aft to break the maverick lock.
Switch sensor of interest to the targeting pod, tms-aft to slave the pod to the radar
Put the ground radar back in SP mode, cursor zero, switch to GMT, and turn toward the targets
Switch SOI to the GMT radar, go to expand mode, slew to the closer end of the moving battalion
I lock the radar on the nearest vehicle, switch the left MFD to the weapon view.
Switch SOI to the targeting pod, go narrow field of view, then TMS forward a couple times to lock on the closest vehicle.
The first attempt to hand-off the target to the maverick fails, as I’m a little far out, and it throws a caution light which I’ll ignore. I hit TMS forward to re-initiate a hand-off. Upon getting a complete, I switch maverick stations, and the lock on station 3 breaks, another master caution, so back to station 3 and initiate point track again.
Once complete, and cursor isn’t blinking, missile step to station 7, switch SOI to the targeting pod, TMS-right to break point track, and slow to the next vehicle, tms-forward to lock and hand-off the target.
With the handoff complete, and a non-blinking cursor on the weapon page, fire both mavericks
Uncage, missile step, uncage, missile step,
TMS-right to break TGP lock, slew to the next vehicle, lock and hand-off
Solid cursor on the weapon page, missile step to switch stations,
TMS-right to break TGP lock, slew to the next vehicle, and hand-off
Hand-off complete, solid weapon lock, pickle, pickle
Uncage, missile step, uncage, missile step
TMS-right to break TGP lock, slew to the next vehicle, lock and hand-off
Solid cursor on the weapon page, missile step to switch stations,
TMS-right to break TGP lock, slew to the next vehicle, and hand-off
Hand-off complete, solid weapon lock, go shoot shootRoll right and turn away from the target, go wide field of view, and watch maverick impacts

Hey Scoob…
Thanks a BUNCH for your boresight video’s! I’m actually getting dialed in to the procedures. One question, (for now)… at the end of both, you show changes made to “falcon BMS.cfg”
set g_bRealisticMavTime 1 // Enables realistic Maverick seeker head gyro spool up time of 3 minutes
set g_fMavFOVLevel 4 // These variables control the amount of zoom of the EXP and FOV modes on the Maverick
set g_fMavEXPLevel 2.0 // These variables control the amount of zoom of the EXP and FOV modes on the MaverickAre these settings recommended? I think I’d prefer the quickest time possible of spool-up time, but will go with what you recommend.
Thanks Mate!

I suggest settings of Mav Time 0, FOV 2, and Exp 0.5.
The Mav Time 0 removes the 3-min warmup delay so you can spend more time practicing bore-sighting and firing than “pretending” you’re realistic by twiddling your thumbs.
The other two increase the zoom levels so you can more easily see through the TGP and WPN view and practice, practice, practice.
I’m not suggesting these are “better”, other than to help novices learn quicker.

Thanks Scoob.
I have been reading Manuals For weeks ( I read slow, up to Pg160 now) and trying get this hand off process reliable & consistent the whole time.
Your Vids was helpful thanks, no where else had mentioned TMS right to go back to area track and the use of TMS down.
My results were unpredictable. My percentages are on the improve, Thanks

Hi,
I’m sure it’s written somewhere in the Sniper section that TMS-RIGHT will command AREA track and TMS-AFT will break track
-
I know of the tools, its just the right process/technique/usage and then building muscle memory.
Training Manual is a bit vague is certain areas. a other U-Tube How-to didn’t cover that usage well.
I had lots of people trying to help teach me bad habits, incorrect usage.
And my reading is at Pg163. -
Jeah the Sniper Part also says that you can press and hold TMS Up, move the cursor, release TMS Up and it will POINT the new cursor position (if possible, otherwhise will go into AREA).
I will try the difference between
aim & pickle, aim & pickle (that’s what I currently always do) and
aim & aim, pickle & pickleMay I ask how many targets you can fire up on depending on which ETA?
My recognition (let away identification) is pretty slow,
I almost end up too close and then I make errors while trying to be fast -
I’m starting to get comfortable with 4 Mavs on the first pass. Any more is just showing off
And I now have the “MAN RNG Knob” roughly implemented on the Hog Throttle which makes a big difference.
If Thrustmaster reproduced the Old Cougar Throttle as stand alone I think a lot of people would be happy. :bdance:

DaqThese are only realistic settings , change those and you are going arcade…

I trying to set up a Mission as MAverick Training for my Squad….
As it seems its not really possible to do a proper Handoff on ground, because you cant lock that buildings on the base.
If you use vehicles or planes it works.
Downside is that its no longer possible to place a vehicle anywhere on the base, looks like there are fixed positions for any vehicle…Can anybody help me to set up some proper targets for a ground hand off?
Hand off in the air is quite useless, since you cant stay in timing or if you have just Ocean below you…
