2. Is it advisable to use small on AIM120 to attack high performance fighters? Compared to medium, small gives a shorter active range thus giving the target less response time. Advanced adversaries such as su27 and mig29 can sometimes escape the missiles using their sheer high performance. By giving them less response time, wouldn’t it have a little higher chance of kill?
No; unless you are trying to reduce your Pk deliberately that is.

I agree with everybody here.
The simulation can be as real as you can imagine, moving the control surfaces is a important procedure to check. So if you like to see videos on youtube of ramp starts and incorporate those procedures to the sim you will have an experience one bit closer to reality.

As far as I know, current AI in 4.33 only reacts to radar activation. Small can be used in sneaky attacks. Use soft lock then support the missile all the way to pitbull.

I tested by firing one of each in dogfight at max range vs MiG-21/23. I couldn’t tell any difference at all. I think the “miles at pitbull” mnemonic changed but I’m not sure.

3 - With a JDAM, you won’t hit a moving target.

1. At ramp start, is it truly necessary to move and exercise all control surfaces to squeeze out the air? I rarely do that, but never had any problem flying the jet. Is there any adverse effect not to do that?
I can’t comprehend how air could be squeezed out. If the -16 is anything like the -135s I flew on, the hydraulic system is sealed for flight. The only way a system could be bled of air in the hydraulic lines is on the ground by maintenance personnel.
I think the control surface checks are to make sure the correct signals are being sent to the surfaces.

It’s not air squeezed out - the system is air tight otherwise it wouldn’t work. It’ll to move the actuators and heat the fluid by this action. Cold oil (hydraulic fluid is an oil) is thicker and more viscous - you want it thinner to remove it’s drag in the system and make the controls perform correctly.

I would suggest try against mig29 or su27. See if you can get higher kill rate outside NEZ. 21/23 are easier to kill given their lesser performance.

Sometimes there can be pressure accumulators that can bleed down and need to be re-pressurized by engine bleed air and/or the hyd pumps…so it can seem like the system is “down” until it is exercised. But that really depends on how such are mechanized - there are a number of types of pressure accumulators, some combine pneumatic and hyd operation. For the F-16 you’d need to consult the Dash 1.

3. With SPI, TGP and JDAMs, what is still good about those laser guided bombs? What tactical situation would still demand the use of laze weapons? I mean JDAM can do the same job, can fire-forget and can do serial pickles for different targets in a quick succession. For moving target, mav is better choice.
In addition to Dee-Jay’s comment above, the use of say a GBU-12 is much superior due to its larger blast radius. I have been able to kill multiple targets either stationary or on the move with 1 GBU-12 where as Mavericks are generally 1 shot, 1 kill (at least with respect to armor).

(Not related to BMS)
The F-16 hydraulic systems can and do vent if necessary. One of the things the reservoir is used for. This is true for the many aircraft. Moving the flight controls prior to the bit is to warm up the fluid and remove the air AFAIK.16. Flight controls - Cycle.
NOTE
• To assist in warming the hydraulic fluid and
removing air from the hydraulic system, maximum stick and rudder pedal inputs should be
made prior to running FLCS BIT.
• To avoid significant hydraulic system A pressure drop and associated servo failure indications, do not open speedbrakes while making
stick and rudder inputs. -

4. CBU87 vs rockeye. 87s are definitely more powerful. But I just realize you can carry 2 extra rockeyes on F16. Wouldn’t 2 extra weapon more than compensate slight inferior performance?
Pandacat,
- the Dash 1 manual has an excellent section on Ramp start. In it it states in RL they do cycle controls for that reason. I’ve never had it create a problem in BMS, so whether you do it is up to you. I do it 'cause they (RL) do it, buts that’s personal preference.
- I agree with other here, it seems a bit of a trade off.
- That’s actually a good question. In RL, to what extent has GPS replaced lasing?
3 and 4) I am a big fan of Mavs, myself. However, in 4.33 I am very excited about the WCMD cbu-105. - Yes, you can carry more Mk-20 then others, but consider this…why in RL has there been a push to smart weapons? If you have one weapon that you know lands 10 feet from your target, you don’t have to carry 12
