Firing Mav question
-
Hi all, just wanted to add another question to the boresight-tgp handoff discussion without starting a new thread. I was flying a CAS mission and had no problems firing the first few mavs, but then on maybe the 4th or so mav I got a tgp handpff fail message (the same avionics fault you get when originally boresighting) Is this as designed, ie a system fault that real world pilots sometimes deal with that has been modeled in game, or is it an error that I’ve made? I’m totally happy if it’s working as the devs intended, just wanted to correct the way I’m doing things if it’s me who’s made a mistake somewhere.

Typing ‘TGP HADF FAIL’ in the Search box brings up this thread: https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?23416-Handoff-not-working-and-avionic-fault&highlight=TGP+HADF+FAIL
Have a look at posts #12 and #14.
We need to know the MFL code you got to understand what went wrong. Possibly you tried to handoff outside the limits of the MBC but that’s just a guess.

There is no random failure built into the TGP Handoff functionality, if you had a failure then maybe for some reason the Mav seeker failed locking, you can try to lock the Maverick manaully to see if it can lock the target.

It was probably covered in the video but the weapon pointing cross should be steady and not flashing as described on the OP.
The other thing to consider when using Mavericks with the radar as the SPI in lieu of the TGP is that the range shown in the maverick screen is based on the radar range. So if you slew up on the screen then you could be locking a target that is out of range even though it looks in range on the WEZ. This is covered in the dash-34.
Using the FCR or the TGP each have their pros and cons. I tend to be able to shoot them faster without the TGP. But the TGP allows you to find specific targets easier and allows you to keep an eye on the target area while coming off the target.

I can boresight mav fine. My issue is to get the cross stop flashing. I tried the keyhole approach, but even though I put the small cross right on top of the big cross, it still won’t stop flashing. Any tips on how to get a solid cross? Also, is there a height and diving angle restriction on mav’s firing envelope?

Yes. AGM-65 training mission, here, is a good place to start: x:\Falcon BMS 4.33\Docs\Falcon BMS Manuals\BMS-Training.pdf

Thanks, Nice video…thought that this was the case but the boresight process is cumbersome…is this actually done in RL?
The Mav’s realism has been improved to the point that I now plan to avoid using them if at all possible. Just too much preparatory overhead, time constraints, keyhole/pitch/G requirements, etc. I’m beginning to appreciate that even in real life, the Maverick platform is a high-maintenance weapon. I enjoy the realism, but not when real life is that tedious.

But against moving targets, mav is one the few guided weapons you can use. I find laze bombs are easier and more intuitive to use. But it requires you to overfly the targets. Mav gives u more standoff range.

WoW that’s my video.:D
Maybe violating the caution which says that AGM-65 boresight should not be attempted on the ground if dome covers are still in place.
Yes - it’s impossible to borsesight the missile with a cover in place. And this is why I’d like the option to load them with or without covers…in my Navy experience I’ve never seen an aircraft launch with dome covers in place. And that may just be a Navy thing, dunno…so having the option on the Loadout page would allow for people to operate in accord with whatever practice they choose to emulate.

Are the Launch Restrictions maximums listed in the training manual in regard to the AGM or the aircraft? I’ve found it’s a lot harder to get the cross to stop flashing at higher altitudes. Could it be at higher altitude with only a 10 degree aircraft descent, (and all other factors within limits), that the cross flashes because the missile optic itself is exceeding the 60 deg div angle looking down at the target before launch?
If this isn’t the case, then I still have the same problem pandacat has that’s not been solved by reading the training manual, bms manual, videos, or posts.

What was your altitude when trying to launch? Also, are you getting a “c” over the hard-point to confirm hand-off is complete?

Good Question. Don’t know. Time to search the manuals more, I guess.

Yes, I am getting good "C"s. But cross just won’t stop flashing, even after I maneuver to put it right in the middle of the keyhole… Again, I was trying to fire missile from 20k+ feet. That might be the issue. Also, by watching some of the videos, do I need obtain a solid cross first before doing the handoff? or as long as I get a “c”, that’s good enuf? Also, after boresighting, is it necessary to unlock mavs first, or can I just go ahead shut it down?

Check TO-BMS1F-16CM-34-1-1 p. 147 for operational limitations. I have better luck pointing nose at target starting at 15,000 feet and descending below 14,000 feet while keeping target in keyhole. Keep the jet steady. Rolling the wings can degrade the lock too.
-
I don’t know if BMS does it but there’s a “30 30 30” rule for Mavericks. Thirty degrees of bank, a change of thirty degrees of bank since lock on, and 30 degrees a second roll rate.

Remember that you are only able to boresight one station at the time, and you’re alligning only the weapons on that station regardless of how many weapons are on the rails. If you have 4 weapons, one per station, you’ll have to boresight 4 times. If you have 6 weapons, 3 per station, you’ll have to boresight only two times. If in your situation you had 2x3 Mavs and you boresighted only one of the two stations, the warning would pop up once you’d depleted the first station and the system selected the other unalligned station.
