AWACS vs. JSTARS
-
Thats a little bit like asking what’s the point of a B-2A when the F-22 can carry bombs…
-
Look at his nickname …… what di you expect ? :wfish:

Can you please show me a credible link that says AWACS is only for air to air and cannot detect ground targets? Otherwise, is the stronger radar the only advantage of the e8 over the e3 in ground search?
Thank you

Awacs radar is for air targets, belive or not but its not used to ground targets.
Someone else can give you more details.

According to the links below, the E3 Sentry AWACS can also detect ground units during interdiction missions.
http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/FactSheets/Display/tabid/224/Article/104504/e-3-sentry-awacs.aspxwhere in this article exactly did you read that AWACS can detect ground-units?

This is much better, if anyone has credible info to the contrary please share. Thank you!

5th paragraph on e3 sentry page or key word “interdiction”
-
In support of air-to-ground operations, the Sentry can provide direct information needed for interdiction, reconnaissance, airlift and close-air support for friendly ground forces. It can also provide information for commanders of air operations to gain and maintain control of the air battle.
Nope, nothing in there that says is has an air to ground mode.
can provide direct information needed for interdiction
That could mean anything e.g. a radio call saying the bad guys are at location xxx, or probably more likely via link 16.

I wondered why AWACS would be giving info on ground threats when their mission is the detection of air threats and don’t have a ground mode. Info via e8 or link 16 makes sense.
Thank you

AWACS is not only a radar platform. It is also an ABCCC.
