Is the dual stage trigger absolutely necessary for BMS?
-
Im thinking of getting the CH products fighterstick because its the only F16 replica that doesnt suck out of the box apparently (hear horror stories about cougar).
But for some reason it doesnt have a dual stage trigger. I know the first detent is for manual lasing. Is this actually useful/needed? I dont think ive manually lased ever. Dont LGBs automatically lase the last 10 seconds anyway?
Also side question
Can I get just the CH Fighterstick and use it with just my x52 (nonpro) throttle? Thanks!

…LGBs don’t lase - the TGP does.
The first detent is also used to activate the ACMI camera. But no - you don’t “have” to have a two-detent trigger on your stick, but you do need to map your single detent trigger to detent 1 and detent 2 at the same time when pulled to get proper function.
Personally, I’d get a Warthog stick - I have both, and have banished my CH stick…and am looking to get a second Warthog stick in future. BIG improvement over the Cougar, and the switch setup you want.

but the throttle. no rotaries at all. how does that work for bums? like radar elevation

Use the Warthog stick with your current throttle; just as you planned with the CH Fighterstick.

I also have three Cougar throttles - one I modified with a Bodner board to use on a Mac (with a Warthog stick), one full Cougar set, and another that I have a RealSim TUSBA set up with. Highly recommend the Cougar TQS with the TUSBA; higher resolution than the basic Cougar PCB (so is the Bodner) - search E-Bay and capture a lone Cougar TQS if you can. They come up from time to time.

Wouldn’t manual lasing be useful if you are buddy lasing (flying with others)…not too useful for SP?

It’s not at all critical. Using the IR pointer or manual lasing for a weapon yeah but you could get away with a separate keyboard key for that. I actually think that if you pressed the second detent you’d get the laser as well, you just might also get the gun if it was selected and armed. I wouldn’t base my decision at all on the 2nd detent unless it was the only difference between two products.

…yes, what Frederf says. But also as he says you could assign that to a free HOTAS button or button combination (like trigger+pinky).
BTW - one thing you also get with the Warthog over the CH stick is a real paddle switch.

Space Bar works pretty good for that too

TARGET can be programmed to give a pseudo rotary effect from switches. This comes in handy for FCR Ant elevation but also for the trim switch to make it behave like the aircraft does.
BTW the WH throttle does have one rotary. Some people do use it for FCR Ant elevation.

But it’s not ‘HOTAS’, and a little cumbersome.
