F14 pilot -Tally 2 at 6 nm

Chuck Yeager tells stories in WW2 where he could spot a flight of Messerschmidts 30 miles out as black dots with his 20/10 vision.

How many were in the flight

How many were in the flight
Good question! 20-30? Yeager says he was able to see them well before the other pilots could, so they put him up front!
I guess itâs easier to see a Swarm of Messerschmidtâs than just one, but heck⊠30 miles out is impressive.

As above, it depends on the conditions. The MiG-28 (or for that matter, the F-5 or F-20) is a small aircraft, and head on it is obviously quite hard to see. Larger aircraft are easier to see, aircraft with a bit of planform are easier again. Its not without reason that most AWIs end with a turn to pure pursuit - lets you setup for SRMs and also makes you harder for the bad guy to see.

You all know it ofcâŠ
One tells bandit at 6miles and 1 sec later, one of the 2, f14 pilots has Tally on the 2 bandits. I assume under the circumstances that the two f14âs are not that separated so that one of them are much closer to the migs then the other?, Are they using tarps to achieve that Tally?
What u guys think? They are flying south,
looking up toward the bandits (above them),
and into the sun(and the sparrow shooter was heads down all the way to at least 10 miles)
And their adrenaline was quite clearly up, as they were being aggressed on.
Not that hard to not see a fighter sized target, given those conditions, I imagine.
Also I believe that Tarps was a look âdownâ thing ?It sounded like the support fighter that tally 2, and missile off, and âturning into meâ which at 6 miles was probably by eyeballs.
If the two were that close together, it would be difficult to discern that the mig was turning into one or the other, so they must have had at least enough separation to show that call (1 did a break away to avoid the missile so that may have been where the separation came from). The most astounding thing to me is that there was direction to âselect fox 2â
for some reason, that switch apparently never got pushed,
the reason he didnât have tone because he was still in aim 7 mode.
How many times have you gotten the helmet on fire and forgot to push an important button, and then at the moment of wez, you canât do what you need to do. âhow many times has it been fail to turn on master arm, and youâre on ccrp, and when you go to pickle nothing comes off⊠gahhhh!!!
some people gotta learn the hard wayIn top gun, the script says they are at 900 kts closure⊠(15 miles per 60 seconds)
At a nominal tally range of 10 miles, thatâs 40 seconds until passing.
That seems like a pretty long time. That said, and airplane looks pretty small from 10 miles away⊠Especially a really small airplane like an F5 pointed nose on.

That direction came from the RIO. Theres extra comms you dont hear in Viper engagements there because of the cockpit management and the use of intercom.
The RIO is expected to be heads down to 10 miles, 10 miles is the transition to WVR. Outside that he is focused on telling the pilot how to complete the intercept, or taking shots if BVR engagement is authorised.

Not exactly optimized engines on incoming fighters. You could possibly see their smoke trails early.
-
Note also that there is a LOT of holes in top gun, timing would not be the first⊠they might say 900 knots. They also said a hard deck of 10K⊠right before they start having to dodge mountains.

I heard it was a game of chicken. When the mig turns hot, the F14 would turn to offset. Then the mig would correct to maintain hot aspect. This went on for 30nm and the f14 crew hoped they would turn cold. However, at 10 nm you hear âcenter up the Tâ. I assume the sparrow is not a offbore.missle. the T is at bottom of the radar screen. They tally a splash on mig1. And the other f14 tallys mig2 for heater shot. However, the volume on the heater grower was turned down or off.

Nope, the guy still had Fox 1 selected⊠just a case of pilot error. Took way too long to realise he needed to hit one throttle switch to get to Fox II
Twas very much a game of chicken, though.
They were also both told not to fire unless fired upon, but they busted that one, too. Couple of hotdogs out there that day!

Another exampleâŠnow about 12-13 miles - Tally 2, if the images are timed with the comsâŠ:-)

Somewhere around 11 to 10 miles I think⊠against Tomcats though. Flying tennis courts should be easy to see. Reckon the Tomcats saw the vipers that soon? Not with that aspect I dont.
