BMS training for dummies (more embarassing questions)
-
I’m going through the training manual.
I started the ramp training and ran into two problems. I made it through the first sweep, then on the second sweep I could not move the JFS switch to start 2. I did right click, but nothing.
Second problem, there is something blocking my view of parts of the right aux console, such as the int lights. I could use my throttle and move that out of the way to see the buttons on the left side, but I’m not sure what is blocking my right view so I can move it.
Step by step I guess.

Checkout our ramp start UPT video it’s geared for pilots just like you and we have the full checklist available on the downloads section on our site.
You can download the checklist, T.O. BMS1F-16CM-1CL-4.33, from the 8th VFW website (registration required to prevent bot activity) from this link:
Post with the ramp start video where you can see it being done correctly and replicate the checlist:

I registered and downloaded the checklist. A lot of it says set up as desired, which for an newbie who looks at a switch and says, “I wonder what this does?” isn’t too helpful. Plus I have the bms manuals printed, so I would like to follow those for now, but I just was wondering what went wrong with the two issues I mentioned above. That was using the bms 4.33.1 training manual. I’m sure I did something idiotic, and I want to know what is that things on the right side that is blocking my view. It looks like a pedal.
Thanks guys for all the help, this website is great.

The most likely is that you accidentally triggered JFS 2 twice which would exhaust the accumulator rendering the jet unable to start so you’d have to frag a new mission or back out and wait for the AI to start it and launch 4 minutes prior to takeoff time.

What is blocking my view on the right side? How can I move it?

Isnt it the arm rest that blocks your view of the air conditioning panel? think thats what you mean. Dont think you can move it but i find the air con knob is under that and i just hover my mouse cursor over it till it turns green then left click once so my air con is in norm, preventing the sensors from overheating.

Ok I did that, I was just wondering if I could move the thing. Thanks cns!

I am guessing by this that you do not have TrackIR? Because you can move your “virtual head” to look around the arm rest. But yeah, if you hover over the correct area, you can click the knob through the arm rest.
-
Yeah, armrest. Trackir is extremely helpful and adds a whole new dimension to the game. I can’t imagine dogfighting or flying formation without it. If the price for trackir scares you, take a look at facetracknoir or some other similar programs. For months I used a tracking device I made out of a clothes hanger and some cheap leds. If you have a second monitor you could use Helios to control all of your cockpit controls on the second monitor (thanks to ice’s awesome profile). Just some ideas. Fly safe!

I do have track Ir. I will see if I can look around that thing.
Another issue is that its really hurting my neck to look down at all the buttons on either side with Track IR 5 at Speed 1.6 and smooth 50. Any recommendations for better settings? I actually tried taking my hat off and holding it so I could scan the buttons.
Once I learn things this won’t be much of an issue as I can hit the buttons fast, but right now I’m in the process of looking for stuff as I follow the bms training manual and the -1 manual, which are fantastic.
Thanks guys.

Search for the ‘Yassy’ profile. I think many of us based our initial TIR profiles from that. You also have Dee-Jay’s profile in your docs …. x:\Falcon BMS 4.33 U1\Docs\Key Files & Input\Device Setup Guides & Profiles\TrackIR .

honestly. i think every TiR profile is unique to everyone… i am using a trackclip pro while also wearing prescription glasses, this causes me to use an assymetrical profile… i’d advice the the topic starter to just create his own profile from scratch and actually use the 3d preview included in the trackir software to fine tune every axis, you want to make sure you can comfortably look down and up with space left over (glasses or no glasses… as i said unique) left and right also needs to be able to look comfortably past 180 degrees. i personally loath deadzones on the pitch and yaw axis so i remove those. and smoothness i’ve set to 7 (almost 1 to 1 in terms of delay)

OP asked for suggestions. I attempted to provide a starting point, not an end state. Each person is free to start (and end) where they please.
Edit:
With regard to glasses, I had similar issues with progressive lenses. On my last visit to the eye doc, I had her give me a ‘special’, single-vision prescription for glasses that were optimized for ‘mid distance’ correction …. about the distance from my chair to my monitor. That pair of ‘gaming glasses’ has done wonders for looking round … especially downward … in BMS.

BTW Scotters, in some AC the amount you can look down in the pit may be limited. There is a line in the config file that will allow you to adjust this globally.
x:\Falcon BMS 4.33 U1\User\Config\falcon bms.cfg (open with any plain text editor, like Notepad). This line:
set g_fViewlimitPitchDown 60.0 // Overrides all A/C viewlimit_pitch_down values from the 3dckpit.dat files, max. 90.0, only higher values take effect
