Noob question regarding navigation when lost / low on fuel
-
Hello, I am currently learning BMS but have a question unanswered by the manuals / tutorials…
Let’s say I am on a long CAP mission and am chasing some hostile fighters, or am finished with a bombing run but low on fuel, how would I know which airbase to go to? Is there some sort of map I can pullup that shows airfield locations ingame?
Or do I just have to do trial and error with airfield TACAN locations?
Basically, what would I do if I get lost, and how do I find the closest airbase to me?

This is amazing!

If you have an Android tablet laying around, you may want to give this program a try. It has an Interactive Map…never get lost again. See link: https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?16247-Falcon-MFD-Software-for-android-tablets&highlight=android+mfd

Wow that looks cool. I’ll have to check it out, have an Android tablet right next to me!

Go home? You should be keeping track of your general location, and the jet has a suite of different tools for navigation. The terrain is distinct enough that if you know roughly where you are, you should be able to nav home visually.

For Korea only…
A little dated, but I haven’t noticed any problems yet.

I set my backup radio for the closest long range TACAN beacon before takeoff, so if I lose everything at least I can find home with the analog instruments.

The primary method for going home is your INS flight plan.
If an emergency field is needed AWACS will give you a vector to the nearest friendly base. The 5 P’s suggest discovering where likely emergency fields are before stepping including position and navaid info. In the unlikely even the INS flight plan is unusable, AWACS is offline, and you haven’t prepared… head south and look around.
