Replacing the DB15 cable on the throttle
-
Hi guys,
I’ve got a cougar with a frayed DB15 cable that connects the throttle to the stick. I contacted Thrustmaster support and they no longer carry the cable. I assume there aren’t any other sources for getting a replacement cable so I’m thinking about fabricating a replacement. Does anyone know how difficult it would be to do that? I assume I could get a DB15 serial cable and cut the connector off one end and solder on the 2x8 connector. Re-using the existing connector may not be feasible, I haven’t tried desoldering it yet so I may have to get another connector. I’d probably need to keep the ring in there (I think it’s called a balun).
Any thoughts on how I could come up with something to keep the cable mounted to the stick? I don’t know how I’d make something like the rubber square that keeps the stock cable in place. Right now I’m thinking a pair of cable camps one the inside and outside of the throttle. Something like this maybe?

Although it looks like a standard DB15 cable, it is not. It is wired differently.
So you’d need to build from scratch.
I’m sure you can find the wiring diagram.
If yours is frayed near the end, couldn’t you shorten it? -
You can probably get a DB15 RS 232 cable and wire that to a mating connector at J2. See the Attached…

Hi, it is VGA connector, not serial

The pins are 1-1, so that’s really more like RS 232.

The fraying is pretty much in the middle of the cable so shortening it makes it really short.
Stevie, If I understand you correctly, I should be able to get something like this https://www.amazon.com/Fullink-Premium-Connectors-Computer-Projector/dp/B00JK096Q0 and cut one end off and wire that to a 16 pin J2 connector. Does that sound about right? That cable (supposedly) has all 15 pins wired and has those ferrite cores on both sides. I’d just need to locate a 16 pin J2 and then wire them up?

Yes, but I would check the spec for a VGA cable - I’m not certain all of the pins are actually wired…in fact, this says they aren’t - pins 4, 11, 12, and 15 are not connected at all:

An RS 232 Standard cable has all pins wired straight through, pin to pin. So use one of those. I forget just what sort of connector the TQS J2 is called, but I recall it not being too difficult to find one if you’d like to start with a fresh connector…but I suppose one could also just splice into the existing one, seeing as the OEM cable is trashed anyway.

After not being able to find an rs 232 cable with the right connector that was sure to have all the pins wired I realized I could cut out the frayed section and splice the wires together. That may have been what Badger was suggesting but I got derailed when he asked if it was frayed at the end. Anyway, after some cutting, soldering, and applying heat shrink, I now have my throttle working!
Thanks for the advice.

I say again more accurately, use 2 VGA connectors and solder all wires 1 to 1. Don’t buy and VGA cable for that.
I have Cougar throttle working with Arduino (Uri_Ba mod) using that connector.Glad you finally made it.
Cheers

All over the place…a couple sources, for reference:
