No radar contacts in 'dogfight' mission
-
Ok, first post so please take it easy on a UK newbie.
I’m just working my way through the BMS 4.33 manual and some excellent YouTube tutorials (by Krause - the guy seems to be a legend).
I was in the dogfight ‘furball’ mode trying to practice using the FCR to lock-up and engage targets and I noticed that I was having real problems consistently finding radar contacts on the left MFD in FCR mode, either using RWS or TWS modes. This was the case when I could clearly see the hostile aircraft right down the boresight, well within 3NM. I’m sure I had the radar range set correctly (minimum in this case), the radar was definitely scanning and the RWR was showing the contacts clearly. Any ideas why the FCR wasn’t showing anything?
Thanks

Antenna elevation?
Radar was scanning, ok, but emiting? https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?28360-Nav-mode-radar-sweep

The radar beam looks like a cone, with the pointy end at the nose of your aircraft. It’s not really difficult for targets to move out of that cone, especially at close range, and especially if you are not tilting the radar appropriately.

Thanks for the fast responses. I accept the point about the radar cone but to be honest I was having trouble finding contacts at all ranges. Perhaps some more practice is required.

yoda_6,
Try these vids by supernova:
-
check FCR cursor
to find targets with the radar, the targets have to be:
-within acceptable aspect (IE, not in the beam)
-within radar gimbal limit (not more than 60~ degrees left or right of your nose)
-within antenna elevation (check FCR cursor; the two numbers nearby mean radar look MAX and radar look MIN at current CURSOR POSITION)
-within range (varies according to target size)
-not outside radar scan limit (IE, if your max range is 10 and they are at 20 you won’t see them)if any one of these is not true you will not see them at all, and for a few of them contacts will drop if they go from true to false.
furthermore, if you’re in visual range you should never bother using the FCR, just switch to dogfight mode, put 'em in HUD and flip switch easy peasy.
