ICP Tumbwheels
-
Hi guys. I’ve got an account in Viperpits and i’m getting lots of help. Ok. Actually i’m using encoders equipped with a pushbutton. Also, the position are sequentially ON, OFF,ON, OFF and so on. That means that i need to rotate the encoder twice the times i need! Not very good. Maybe there’s a way to obtain an input also wen turn into OFF position just like my 3-way switch for DRIFT/CO, NORM and WARN RESET. Here the NORM position is the OFF ones and is mapped. I try to get the potentiometers with switch included. What specs it should have? Need resistors? How to wire all togeter to make it work?

I have those carbon film pots for the thumbwheels. They are the lowest profile possible but hard to implement unless you have correctly designed wheels.

Another question. Maybe a very stupid question… but i’m really total noob in this things… so, i thing i’ve found the correct pots. 50K 16.5mm W/SW. the question is: as you know the pots had to be placed at 90° respect the panel in order to keep the wheels vertical and perpendicular to the panel… and in order to install the pots i need to invert the two of them on the other side. So the two of them are inverted! I hope you understand what i mean… if i overturn those 2 pots they works the opposite way! The switch will be on the upper side and in order to give an “increase” input i have to turn the wheel from up to down… the exact opposite of the other two on the other side! I wish i haven’t said lots of stupid things… :uham:

Well, just invert the axes in the PoKeys configuration then.
-
Thanks Blu3wolf. I don’t know how pots works. I’m wondering in what position the built-in switch works. I mean, i know that the built-in switch is located in the "start "position of the pots so that you start to move the pots, the switch is actioned an so on… If so, if i overturn the pot the built-in switch will be on the upper position and non at the start position as it should be. Am i wrong?
-
No, you are right. That could present an issue. Do they sell a mirror image, with the switch being turned the other way?
-
I have to verify this Blu3wolf. Thanks again
-
Does exist “mirrored” pots? What keyword i have to type on the web to search this inverted pots?
-
I’d try looking for left/right hand, and/or clockwise (CW)/counter clockwise (CCW) to increase/decrease resistance.
-
Ok Stevie. I’ll try! Thanks so mutch to all

As far as PoKeys is concerned, whether it increases or decreases resistance as you rotate the axle in a given direction is completely irrelevant - you can configure the output of the PoKeys unit as you like, and this includes mirroring or inverting the axis behavior.
However, if the switch is only tripped at one end of the travel of the pot, then you will have a problem when you want to invert the pot to place it on the other side, is the issue.
About the only other solution I can think of, other than sourcing a mirror image pot, is to make a switch that is built into the thumbwheels that you will press onto the axle of the pot - but this seems like a fiddly solution unless you are an expert switch builder.

Yes Blu3walf i understand what you mean. I really don’t know if all the 4 thumbweels have the ON/OFF stage and so the switch. By looking the ICP panel (i’ve bought it from Hispapanels several years ago and it’is a little outdated) only the left ones had the “OFF” label. I hope that that’s true only for the left ones. There i can get 2 normal pots for the right ones and reverse axis on the pokeys U.I. . By the way, i have to check this in the BMS Setup/Controllers page ( i know that actually the CONT TW is not implemented btw). Stay tuned

Could you share some details, maybe pics, on the build? Just starting with an ICP myself, parts on order. Would be nice to see someone else’s ideas
-
Verified. SYS is the only one TW with built-in switch. Good!
-
Hi Terminator. For shure! I’ll order the new ICP by Hispapanels tomorrow. When i get all i will post some pics. Stay tuned
-
Nice, I ordered one from Hispapanels also. Still have to order a pokey, I’ll start building the switch PCB first before I do that.

I think SYM and BRT both have switches - they both have “OFF” legends imprinted on the ICP. So it would/should be just the left side ones, but you can double check me…
-
Hi Stevie. I also was thinging so. But i checked the FUL KEY mapping into BMS CONTROLLER SETUP U.I. and i’ve found that SYS is the only with ON/OFF. Anyway i’m going to purchase 2 pots with switch included.
Terminator. I will use something different, not the PCB. I don’t know the english for “scheda millefori”. Anyway it is a board with a lots of holes where you can install all the components you want such as pushbutton, led’s and so on. Stay tuned. -

That’s exactly what I meant and gonna use, still a PCB though [emoji2].
That language barrier doesn’t make it easier [emoji1] [emoji1] -

That language barrier doesn’t make it easier [emoji1] [emoji1]Hahah! Lots of technical terms!
