4.33 Korea AWACS issue

Here is the scenario……
Flying a sweep package out of Pohang airbase. Half through the flight AWACS announces “Panther 1 be advised hostile aircraft detected bearing 310 20 miles” I have no joy on my radar and none of the rest of my flight seem to notice anything. Request threat picture, AWACS announces picture clear. Request threat vector, AWACS announces I don’t have anything right now". A few minutes later. “Panther 1 be advised threat aircraft detected bearing 305 10 miles” No joy on the radar or visual, same response from AWACS when requesting threat picture and threat vector…"picture clear and I don’t have anything right now. A couple minutes later “panther 1 be advised threat aircraft bearing 301 1 mile” A couple seconds later I take a hit from an IR missile and the aircraft explodes before I can eject.
My Question is…is this a bug with AWACS or am I missing something? Keep getting shot down by ghost aircraft that AWACS sees and yet doesn’t see at the same time.
Thanks ahead of time for responses, and many thanks to the dedicated fans who have made BMS what it is today!

Once again, thanks game AI AWACS (Thanks, Obama), for not including an altitude cut in its point out.
Another case for a good well trained human AWACS and better inputs for them to work from.
Seems to me like the bandit wasn’t particularly moving, and over time you flew right over it.
If it was in the weeds you might not have been looking low.Another option is that it could have been coming in and out of coverage of the AWACS,
So it gets detected, AWACS reports it… it falls out of detection… you call up for picture/threat, nothing…
it pops back in to detection, AWACS reports it… it falls back out again… rinse repeat
Terrain masking could (conceivably) do this.
Notch might be a factor.
So could range, conceivably.Maybe the ehvil bandits took off, popped up, ran back down and landed,
then when you were 10 away they popped up and shot IR at you
That doesn’t sound very AI-ish, but it sounds like something I would do -
Yeah I hear you. Thanks for the input. Just want to be sure Im not missing something important. If it happened only once I would just chock it up to pilot error, but this is the 3rd time. (possibly still pilot error) I wonder in the Avionics config if I selected a different radar suite if that would help. Been tempted in the past but never did. Figured just go with whats stock.

Were you flying near/over an enemy airbase?

not sure, I was totally wrapped up in trying to find the threat…that’s a great point though. Ill be sure to note that next time this occurs…many thanks for the help with U3 btw!!
-
Awacs was most likely picking up their erratic radar sig while they were preparing for takeoff(to kill you!! haha), hence the warning/nothing there deal.
No prob on the update, you’re welcome.

This is a good excuse for running AVTR while airborne… doesn’t prevent you getting shot down, but at least afterwards you can see what did shoot at you.

Hi Wray!
“Panther 1 be advised threat aircraft detected bearing 305 10 miles” No joy on the radar or visual, same response from AWACS when requesting threat picture and threat vector…."picture clear and I don’t have anything right now.
In 2003 I had the same in real life. During several minutes, AWACS was giving some indications on a slow mover spot, no altitude … same location, disappearing from time to time … vertical position, still no joy … after some time, we realized it was this :
My Question is….is this a bug with AWACS or am I missing something? Keep getting shot down by ghost aircraft that AWACS sees and yet doesn’t see at the same time.
ACMI would have been useful here.
I wonder in the Avionics config if I selected a different radar suite if that would help
There is no different radar available in AvConf. And anyway, no, it wouldn’t help.
Regadrs!

Sounds like an AMBUSHCAP. Record ACMI and review it…there shall be your answer.

Dee-Jay, you need to write a book. I am serious. The stories you have are fascinating. Very, very few have the RL experience you live every day. Hats off to you mate.

Sorry ahead of time about the confusion……I meant the different RWR models not FCR. There are a couple different options but ive yet to try any of them out. …Funny story bte. Im sure it wasn’t at that exact moment but you don’t get any better fuel for great stories than that my friend!!
-
I love ACMI. I switch it on 99% of the time so I can see all the contacts that I had NO idea were around me and failed to pick up.
-
I never really gave ACMI much thought, but that being said I believe ill start using it. In hindsight Im starting to see how valuable a tool it can be.
-
So the RWR wouldn’t help you out if you got ninja’d by a heater, right? Particularly if they could visibly see you.
One other thing to consider is murphy’s law…
If your search radars can see them… their search radars can (probably) see you!
