How NOT to attack SAMs with HARMs
-
Here’s a Tacview video for your amusement! :munch:
I was practicing the HARM training mission the other day, and I turned on my ACMI. Decided I’d try to record and upload a 2560x1440 Tacview video to Youtube.
I was also curious to see how many (if any) of the SAM targeting radars my AI wingman and I could take out with SAMs.
If anyone wants to make a list of things not to do when attacking SAM sites, you could probably make a long one from this video!
For example, attacking the SA-6 by flying between the SA-6 and the SA-3, so they can both shoot at us! :der:
But best of all is when I decided to fly straight towards the SA-3, hoping they’d turn on their targeting radar so I could shoot them with a HARM. And then, when they didn’t oblige, I said to myself “well, I guess they’re just not on the job today, I’ll turn around and fly away…”
At which point the fusillade of SA-3s began  I think that’s the part that will have people laughing the hardest.
I realized that one way to make a SAM battery ineffective is to make them shoot all their missiles at you, until they run out. Somehow I don’t think they teach Viper drivers to do that in Wild Weasel school…
Finally, I decided to head home after they ran out of SA-3s… at which point some guy on the ground shot me with an SA-14. I think fate got tired of protecting me so much, and decided to remove me from the gene pool.
“Parachutist” is such a gentle term… sounds better than P.O.W.! I guess I’m a `guest’ of the Democratic People’s Republic now. Oof. If you’d like to leave the Hermit Kingdom at the end of your Weasel mission, take everything I did here, and do the opposite, lol!
Enjoy a good laugh,

Yes they’re smart buggers now, for most of the time sams seem very hesitant to activate their fcr when you come at them directly. This could all be Placebo but the search radars seem to play a larger role too by replacing all non fire-critical fcr functions, making them more important targets. SR down-> FCR more up it seems. Furthermore I think I noticed a pattern that if an sa3 is covered by e.g. an sa2 it simply will not reveal itself when it is not needed. Just can’t be sure because of all the randomness, curious to learn of this is all my own projection or something actually modeled.
