Questions about flight and package radio channels
-
Hi guys, I had some questions about the radio procedure regarding campaigns and AI in BMS.
First of all I’ve checked this: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3438435/Radio_Frequency_Concept_in_BMS website and I already know that VHF is for in-flight and UHF is for intra-flight comms.
My question is, how do I know what package I’m in when playing campaign so that I can select the correct channel? Let’s say I’m on a SEAD Strike mission. How do I listen to the escort flight? There are PKG’s in the scheduled flight list, but those are 5 digit numbers.
Also another follow up question would be: do I need to be on the same UHF freq to be able to datalink other flights in my pkg?
Thank you all and I wish you a great evening

The frequencies associated with V1-5 and U1-5 all listen to your own flight and U6-10/V6-10 all listen to your own package. It’s magic. You can’t tune in some other package by mistake. U7/V5 U6/V1 U9/V1, etc. all give the same result. You also don’t have to use V for flight and U for everyone else, it’s just convention. The reverse would also work.

Thanks frederf, and I think that only applies to AI right?
also I’d like to know this:
let’s say my UFC datalink settings as a sead strike are: 11/12/13/14
how would I add the lead of the escort flight? just punch in 21? or should I consider their flight names such as Mudhen41, Stud21? -
If I understand correctly, the flight numbers in a package are in the order they have take off clearance. You can use VHF presets 1-4 to listen to each of these flights in your package and 6-10 to listen to packages 1-5.
I use VHF preset 11 to monitor broadcasts from all the aircraft near me and 12 if I also want to hear AWACS and ATC comms to those aircraft. 12 can be very noisy. I mostly use 11 so have that set as default for VHF in my data cartridge. There is documentation in the manual listing all the presets and what sim activities they monitor using the default frequencies. I think there is enough versatility in the presets they are useful for most AI/human comms without having to input frequency numbers unless human vs human requires extra security against spying.

Thanks guys, you’ve been extremely helpful. And thank you Pv for notifying me about proximity channel. I didn’t think it was modeled. It’s awesome!

The DL addresses are of type 11, 12, 13, 14 through 51, 52, 53, 54. Which DL address is which package member depends on their flight order which is 99% of the time the same as they show up in briefing to to bottom. The first digit is the flight number (1-5) and the second is member number within each flight (1-4).
