Strange JSOW pattern during final attack
-
Hi folks,
I recongnized a stange behavior from the JSOW during their final turn and I’ve no idea why. Bur first the setup:
Faclon Version: BMS 4.33.3
Theater: Balkan 3.2
Task: attack SA11 Battalion, alined heading 180 / 360 on the coast
JSOW setup: Attack Azimuth = 180
EGEA = 1500ft
ROB = 5.0 NM
Impact Option: Tandem
Impact Spacing: 1200 ft
My attack heading before releasing the weapon 220.Now, whats going wrong, or what is strange.
The two released JSOW are turning into the final attack heading (180) much to early. They are flying this heading parallel to the target. (see picture 1)Closer to the target the JSOWs are making again a 90 degree turn and hitting the traget in a Sidy-By-Side pattern (see picture 2). This was not planned!!!
Has anybody an idea why the JSOW are flying that strange? My indent was to hit the target in Tandem pattern, in line with the SA11.

Several questions/ideas coming to my mind but none to satisfy me: wind, lack of ammunition energy (thus launch speed, altitude, JIZ positive but I suppose so)… (target movement…)
I started to launch IAM on Monday so I’m particularly interested about the next posts. -
Launch speed was 350kts CAS (0.81 Mach)
Release Altitude: 23.500 ft
JIZ was positiv at 24 NM target range. I delayed the release till 22 NM due the fact that the solution is computed to the center of target and I planned an impact spacing from 1200ft.
Target movement is excluded. The JSOW would not follow the target movement because the weapon is not working by an aktive sensors (like AGM-65). But as you can see on the picture, the weapon hits the target finally.So from my point of view I meet all parameters according to the TO-BMS1F-16CM-34-1-1 manuel.

It’s interesting you mention dropping them tandem. If I’m reading this right…
“ Side-By-Side - (Two Triangles Abreast) Two weapons are to be dropped on the target with impacts points perpendicular to the attack axis. The station 3 weapon will be released against the left impact point and the station 7 weapon will be released against the right impact point.”
This is on Dash-34, p.198
If I may ask the obvious question, on the wpn page were the 2 triangles side by side, or one above the other? Per pp. 189-190. It sounds to me that you got a side by side delivery. -
I know, it looks like an input error or pilot failure. But I tryed it several times, and alway the impact option was set to Tandem (one triangle over the other). I would suggest you try by your own, because I really want to know if this JSOW pattern is reproducable.

EuKeuleYou do have me intrigued. Just out of curiosity, what happens when you launch them in side by side mode?

In Side-By-Side mode, the two JSOW are working as they should. If the attack azimuth is set perpendicular to the batallion, they are hitting the target in the correct and preplanned angle with the right impact spacing. In this mode it is all good.
But this is normally not the best way to attack a complete lined up batallion.If you would like to test the JSOW, I’m really curious of your results.
