Big difference running BMS in win 64 bit vs32?

Like the title says, performance wise
Thanks, Marc…

As ever depends on XYZ and often system related as well as settings related.
I personally noticed an improvement in BMS U3 on max settings going from 8GB RAM to 16GB RAM last year (Win 10 x64)……of course 32bit Win can only address what 3.2GB RAM max.
You are not running a 32 bit version of Windows with 8GB RAM are you?

Didn’t know 32 bit could only address 3.2GB. No I’m on Win 7 64 bit. It’s for a friend that is running win 7 32bit, he was asking if it was worth upgrading to 64bit, he’s got 2 GIG of ram in a HP Compaq 8100 Elite SFF i5 2500, 3.3ghz, Geforce 730GT 2gig
So I guess he should invest in more ram and a 64bit OS?Thanks, Marc…

Was thinking that was a Laptop but looks to be a business PC……he needs to look at what is most cost effective for him if he can go to 8 or 16GB RAM then sure why not.
The other obvious bottleneck he needs to sort out is the 730GT which looks very low end…out of the 700 series the 770/780 are ones to go for and the 750 was based on the newer architecture. This is assuming he has the tower and not the small form PC otherwise fitting one in the case would be a problem…and also you need the required power supply to run it.
Again he might think getting a new system might be better for him with modern interfaces like SATA 3, USB 3, PCIe3, depends what future plans he has. (If he went on to DCS even 8GB barely cuts it) -

Thanks, Marc…

Does he want to get into flight simming? Unfortunately, to get the best out of it, you WILL have to invest quite a bit. Trying out flight simming on a low-graphics PC on a 15" screen using keyboard and mouse and I can’t blame anyone for walking away from the “potential” hobby. Trying out flight simming on a high-end PC with triple screen, TrackIR, HOTAS + rudder, 2nd screen for instruments (either touchscreen or with Cougar MFDs), voice command sofware for voice comms, and I’d be willing to bet the only one who’d walk away is someone who isn’t interested in flight in the first place.
Another issue is the learning curve in Falcon. Flying around and just taking the sights isn’t what Falcon is about. It’s going into enemy territory, finding the target, and dropping bombs on it… all the while showing the middle finger to all enemy forces in the area. This bit of Falcon comes MUCH, MUCH later. I’m just saying that the learning curve may be a put-off for some people.
Either way, good luck with getting him into the hobby!

Hi Marcq
Its most likely he has a single 2GB stick according to Compaq site specs, so first upgrade path is acquire 2x4GB DDR3 SDRam while its still available, or even some secondhand as many have gone over to DDR4 boxes. Don’t wast money on 16GB. But do buy a matching pair. Even 2x2GB of good Ram will make a big difference.
Second I would recommend a SSD for the OS, it only needs to be 64-128 GB or even a slightly more expansive 250+GB Samsung He can move over latter in to a new rig. Software will usualy come with the drive to clone the OS, but as He needs to go 64bit its a mute point. There is a good chance it might already have a 64GB SSD.
Third item would be GPU however it needs to be small form factor, might be hard to find, ebay? A 2GB card is minimal but still usable for up to 1920x1080, just.
And of most importance is a 64bit OS, Win 7 while he can.

Yeah! He’s going to start with the OS, ram and later maybe a video card, he’s on a tight budget

So I guess he should invest in more ram and a 64bit OS?I think the answer to this question is a big fat YES at this day and age. Wasn’t it a while back when 8GB RAM was the norm? Now, 16GB kits are cheap-as-chips. Get a 64-bit OS and 16GB RAM and see how fast the OS is and how quickly programs load. Then get a 128GB (or bigger) SSD for the OS and see how much faster THAT upgrade makes the computer in terms of boot time and productivity. Even if he doesn’t go into flight sims, those improvements will benefit him in whatever way he uses his PC.
How tight is this tight budget? eBay and other 2nd-hand places can be a literal gold mine for PC upgrades especially GPUs. I was able to assemble a gaming rig for my son with £120 for CPU/mobo/RAM and then another £80 for a GPU… it wasn’t cutting-edge by any means but it did 1080p gaming with no issues at all.
