Forum - closing threads / marking threads as solved?
-
Hi!
As I’m using this (great) forum more and more, I would like to handle my threads correctly.
How can I close a thread (mark it as solved) when my initial question was answered or my issue was solved (by helpful replys)?
Also, why are most of the threads “hot threads (red)” and not standard threads (blue/grey)?
My posts are also “hot threads” but I do not know why.
Thank you!

Regular users cannot close threads, if you are that concerned about the thread remaining open then pm a moderator to close it for you, unless it is a thread that is breaking forum rules though more then likely it will just die on its own.

Personally, I never understand why thread authors elect to close threads once they’ve got the answer they want. It was frequent on another forum I visit by one member and it irritated me to no end.
Even if a thread’s initial question has been answered, it may be wrong and then you have false information sat there for people to read wrongly.

^+1 Also lots of questions lead to great discussion if it doesn’t get out of hand.

I suspect a “hot thread” is just some algorithm seeing how current it is and how many views/replies it gets.
I agree that locking threads is generally bad. A better approach may be to ask users to edit their original post when the OP feels his issue is resolved.
i.e.
“How do I open the canopy?”
Finally, I think that some of this information is being answered over and over again because bmsforum.org is a forum only. I think it would be better as a wiki and forum in a lot of instances. One of the problems with forums is you may have to sort through tons of outdated “fixes” for a fix of 4.33.U3. A wiki that paid attention to supported versions of BMS would be most welcome.
becomes
"SOLVED

"SOLVED
How do I open the canopy?"
That makes sense! I think it’s very helpful if you got some kind of indication that a particular question/problem is declared solved (at least for the one originally posting).
I appreciate the kind of forum the most, where the answers are rated, like http://stackoverflow.com. That just makes it easy to start solving the problem with the probably “best” answer.

Important things (imo) are in most cases in my hot list… if that helps.
One can make a similar one for whatever or point them to me and have them added… also solutions can be done as blog entries or articles in this forum.
Usually things answered in the manuals better stay in the manuals like the how i close the canopy.
