HARMs against ships… can it be done?

Hi folks,
in our sqdn we were wondering if it’s possible to disable the tracking / guiding radars of certain types of ships using the AGM-88. The missiles lock on and hit their targets as they should, but they don’t disable the radars.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts,
Uwe

There isn’t a “radar” to destroy on the ships. It’s just the ship, with radar integrated into it. So you would have to destroy the whole ship for it to work.

Just opened a thread about the Growler, you have a choice between long range air-to-surface missiles… or a jammer

It is should be no different in my opinion as a ground based system. Bullet
It helps to read, so the ship as a whole is the radar, not the mast or on ours phased array.
My Bad.

I guess a naval unit / ship isn’t subdivided into separate entities like an AD battalion… would be nice to be able to disable a ship’s radar though.
All the best, Uwe

Kinda of sucks, lol. Would be nice to knock out a dd’s radar, but I do under stand why.

BMS 4.33 brought working avionics and guidance for AGM-84A Harpoon, just use it!

I have read a novel that described a naval tactic where SEAD or DEAD flights of f18s launch a barrage of HARMs to disable the ships’ radars and then the strike elements moved in for the kill with bombs or missiles. Or even force the ships to shut down their radars while Harpoons are homing in on their targets. The issue is, for BMS now, anti missile capability is not modeled, so currently the ships have no defense against anti-shipping missiles. Every valid launch means a hit. I believe as BMS evolves, we could have anti-missile capability in the future. Then, we also need separate radar systems from the ship itself. That way the naval tactics would become more dynamic.
PS: not sure if radars and ships are separate in DCS. But anti-missile is well modeled in DCS. I have seen ships taking out even HARM launched at them.

The Gorn is our resident HARM expert, where’s he at…?

well you can destroy ships with SDBs and yes we did this. I havent yet tried to lock a ship with the HAD, but it might work. I destroyed 6 t62s with a HARM though.

How do you aim your harms? Or it’s pure luck?

Surely - soon - anybody who understands this post would be approaching the threshold of age-related dementia.
Then… The Gorn can rest without thoughts of terrible vengeance coursing through his embarrassed veins…!
Besides, there were no ships involved. Just me. A wingman. Fate.
(Surely the YOUNGEST dudes to remember this would have to be in their 50’s now, right…??)

Age-related something? Sure, many things, but not dementia. Which means I recall the facts and understand the post… (A Frugal’s vet salutes you both gents)

I’m 42 and remember it! Rare example when age brings some advantage! LOL

45 here also remembering it

Hoover, it’s been a very long time, but I’m almost sure I once hit a ship with a HARM in BMS. I was flying a Hornet C, and targeted the RWR indicated Sa(n)-4 on a Krivak, via HAS mode.
Again, if memory serves, I watched it hit the ship, but the Gecko stayed up. Or, I should say a Gecko, as I assumed that the HARM killed one radar but a Krivak has 2. Whether that was a correct assumption or not is hard to say. -

It worked in A-10 Cuba with Harms.
In F4 its about whole vehicle HP. I guess you can kill small vessel with Harm (if Harm HP damage > ship HP…or you launch multiple Harms).
Antimissile protection is not simulated, but there was procentual missile PK factor, which simulated it a bit.I used to create BOSS ship in AF times - with incremental damage system. It was an objective with two docked static ships and SAM system- back of ship was a carrier (it launched helis in 2D + waypointable cruise missiles withwery long legs and chaff/flares/ECM capability), frontal section was surface ship capable firing long range ASMs and SHORAD and there were spots for SAM mast with powerfull long range launcher in the center.
I also tried to setup ship as armybase, with mentioned capabilities + posibility housing troops and launch airborne missions (LHD)
I guess some hate “fake” or “frankenstein” approach, but I had a great fun with it.
