Is just having Falcon.exe on your disk sufficent?
-
I am just getting back into BMS and in prior days, just having the file Falcon4.exe on my drive was sufficient to allow BMS to install. Today, when I tried to install BMS, it asks for the Falcon install. While I still have my original Falcon 4.0 disk, I no longer have a CD drive. Do I have to buy the full falcon game again and download it over the internet?
Solved the problem. Used my wife’s computer that has a CD drive and copied the files to a USB drive and the transferred them to my computer.

Yes you to have it fully installed. I was in the same situation just that I still had the original disk but not readable anymore.
Bought it again of from steam for 4.99

Are you talking original Falcon4 or original Falcon4 Allied Force? Latter does not count if I am correct.
Cheers Obi1

I had both. But the falcon4 was from the Microprose orginal Falcon 4.0

I paid £40 for f4 23 years ago; spent more time reading the manual than flying it. Was never happy with performance or graphics. Had loved ef2000 and f22.
Had the manual until very recently, still might have it.
Fortunately despite not having the original disk anymore I still have a backup. Not a chance I am paying for it again, even £5!

The requirements changed from “owning a copy” when it was simply enough to have the CD in a drive or have the falcon4.exe available, to “having a copy installed”. I have it installed to my S drive which I use for anything and everything not every day, 160MB on a 2TB drive is nothing. 4.35 will install perfect once the Setup finds the registry key and checks the install directory for a set of criteria. Simply pointing to the CD or falcon4.exe is not enough now. This requirement was set by the license holders and Dev have to comply to ensure continued permissions to make releases, etc.

I wouldn’t think of it as paying £5 for another copy of a 23 year old game, instead think of it as paying £5 for the most accurate F-16 simulator you’re ever likely to see. Others are quite happy to pay $79.99 for pre-beta/early access but grudge a £5 elsewhere…?

I’ve already paid full whack for it and still technically own it. I never sold it and have a backup. Why would would I buy it again?…unless you are saying the money goes to the BMS team? No issue giving them some money.

If you own it and have the ability to install it what is your point? Install it, install BMS, done…. but if you did not appreciate Falcon 4.0 23 years ago you are going to hate it now as it’s quite a bit more complex.

No real point, just a little anecdote. I’ve been flying BMS for years and love it thanks.
Falcon 4.0 ran too poorly for me to enjoy at the time, it’s only since BMS that I have got any value for money for my original purchase.
