Falcon 4.0 and Steam?
-
Ok, the only reason I have Falcon 4.0 installed is so BMS can see it at startup. I forgot who I bought it from, but I thought I was buying an independent copy of Falcon 4.0. As it turned out after I paid for it I was transferred to Steam to download it. That’s not what I wanted. So, now I have Steam installed and I hate Steam. It’s always running in the background and I always get messages from peeps trying to be friends. No thanks.
The problem is, if I uninstall Steam it takes Falcon 4.0 with it. Then BMS won’t startup. My question is……How can I keep Falcon 4.0 and uninstall Steam?

You don’t need Steam to be running in order to use BMS.
With Steam open, click the Steam menu, and choose Settings. Click on the Interface tab, and uncheck the box that says: “Run Steam when my computer starts.” That will stop Steam from running when you start your PC up, it will only run if you choose to run it.

Done. Thank you.
Man, they really bury that setting. I couldn’t find it at all on the Steam web site. I had to right click the Steam icon and got to it that way after searching and going 4 pages deep. Anyway, all done. Thanks again.

No problem! Happy flying!

What are you doing on Steam that this happens to you? I’ve been on Steam since forever and the only people I am friends with I have requested them to be so. There are no annoying people asking me to be friends….
-
I’m not on Steam. It shows up every time I boot up the computer in the morning. I get 5-6 of them every day. Now that Steam won’t start when I boot up the lonely peeps won’t be showing up. I used to find it funny that strangers wanted to be friends. Then it got annoying.
-
I’m just confused why you blame Steam for the actions of its users? If you were on Facebook and a lot of people wanted to be friends and it got annoying, is it’s Facebooks fault?
Granted, you’ve turned off Steam from starting up on boot, but when you start Steam again, the problem will present itself…. might be a good idea to find out what it is that is getting these people to add you as a friend/contact, and get rid of the problem at the source.
-
If I didn’t have Steam installed I wouldn’t have the problem. Who should I blame? However, I just tested it and the problem is gone now that Steam is turned off at startup. I consider the source as Steam and I got rid of it.
Love it when a plan comes together.

If you got the GoG version, you wouldn’t need Steam. Who is to blame?

Now you’re becoming annoying Ice. Cut the crap!

Can’t you just delete steam but keep the files of the game? (steamapps->common->falcon 4.0. put the files in a different folder) I guess you have nothing to loose so you might want to try…

That was my original question. I have tried different ways, but I can’t figure out how to do it. Maybe it’s not possible. Everytime I try something I have to download Steam and Falcon 4.0 again, so I sort of gave up and thought i’d ask. I’m a stubborn old coot and asking for help is way down on my list. I always try to figure things out on my own.
I’m ok with what I have now.

Just sayin’, Pete

Well, the way forward at this point is to uninstall Steam and see if BMS still works. If BMS just looks for the actual game files, then maybe it might. If BMS looks for some registry entry or something else that Steam takes with it when you uninstall it, then obviously that won’t work. I could be wrong as I’ve never really uninstalled Steam so I’m not sure what it takes with it and what it leaves behind in your PC… but then again, I don’t own Falcon 4.0 on Steam either so no way for me to test this.
A possible option is to ask Steam or your initial seller for a refund? I know Steam will do this if you have less than 2 hrs gameplay on the title, and I think they also have a 2-week window for this… but I’m not sure if they’ll do this if you purchased the game elsewhere. Did you buy it from Retroism? Anyway, get a refund, get the GoG version, and you can download your copy without installing GoG or anything else aside from Falcon 4.0.

You’ll notice my join date on this forum is April. Even though I didn’t really start with BMS until a little while ago. Back in April I did buy the GOG version. I had problems with BitTorrent and never did get BMS installed. Then I had a total HD failure and lost all info. My system then was an 8 year old Alienware. I figured it served me well and retired it and bought a new gaming system. At the time I was getting into DCS and sort of forgot about BMS for awhile. Well, I didn’t forget it. I just put it on the back burner. When I came back to BMS after not being that happy with DCS I forgot all my info at GOG. With Falcon 4.0 being so cheap I went to another source to buy it. As I said in my first post I didn’t know it would come from Steam until I had already paid for it. I just went with it thinking I could somehow figure out how to get rid of Steam but keep Falcon 4.0.
It’s fine now. I don’t really care if Steam is installed as long as it’s out of sight. With it off the startup, I don’t get it updating by Steam every morning or those pests who want to be friends. So, i’m ok with things as is. I was until Ice started to bust my ass. Do you know him? What a pest.
Hi Ice.

Who is this -Ice character? He really can be annoying sometimes, bothering old people with his smart ideas Hehehehe…
Sorry Pete, I didn’t know about your GoG issues… or I may have forgotten. You do know you can contact GoG to retrieve your account, right? I’m glad you’re sorted now though… and yeah, Falcon 4.0 is so cheap that I did a giveaway last year.

It won’t work. BMS must be looking for registry settings. I tried doing a game file copy to a VM to try to setup a stand alone server and BMS told me I didn’t have a copy of Falcon installed.
Now, I’m easily willing to say I missed something if someone else was able to get BMS to work with a simple file copy of Falcon 4.

It would be nice if BMS only looked for Falcon 4.0 when you install BMS. From that point on it won’t look for it. If it shows for the install it proves you have Falcon 4.0 and there’s no need to keep looking for it.
So far i’ve bought Falcon 4.0 3 times plus AF. No complaints. BMS is worth way more than i’ve paid out so far. Especially, when you look at what it cost for DCS. Just as bad is iRacing. I must have spent $800 before I finally had enough. I actually feel guilty about not paying for BMS.

I’m not sure if you’re aware but BMS used to only require the .exe to work…. so you could just copy the .exe off the disc, put it in your HDD somewhere, and BMS only looks for it during the install procedure. You can delete the .exe afterwards. With the purchase of the Falcon IP by Tommo, the agreement the BMS devs with the current IP holders is what we have now — a complete Falcon install and a check each time BMS starts.
