Beginner update - SkyWarp

Hello Falconers,
So I started in mid-January, based on my hello post. Absolutely loving the game so far. I’ve read through the BMS manuals, the original falcon 4.0 manual, the realism patch 5 manual (which is a good read but it’s not mentioned anywhere in the main docs, I just found it by reference in a forum post), and the BFM parts of the real life T-38 and F-16 manuals. Seems like just about everything is covered somewhere, which is good. On the down side sometimes you have to look through five pdf’s to find what you’re looking for.
Mostly been playing dogfight mode so far, ran a couple of missions in campaign with mediocre results, so I went back to dogfight to practice with A-A and mastering the avionics. Started with easy planes 1vs1 and been working my way up. Now I can usually beat a Mig-29 in a circle fight (keep that speed up), haven’t tried the SU-27 yet. Latest scenario I’ve been playing is 2vs2 versus Mig-29’s with Adders and Archers and doing pretty well, trying out various strategies. Sometimes my AI wingman is a boss, sometimes not so much.
Couple of questions for the veterans out there:
Starting at about 30nm out, I order my wingman to run single-side offset. So he peels off, but as soon as he’s in engagement range of the AMRAAM he fires it off long and returns to formation. Is there any way I can make him separate further to bracket the targets before firing?

Can the DTC save your HSD settings such as centered and coupled? And the IDM to continuous mode? Having to set those each round of dogfight. Not a big deal but gets tedious if you’re practicing a lot of dogfight.
-
Is there any way to make the HSD orient to north up when it’s frozen? Don’t see that anywhere in the docs. Not a big deal but I think it would help my SA.
-
When I’m in dogfight mode and padlocked to a target, is there an easy way to tell if I have AIM-9X (HOB) or AIM-9P selected? Or do I have to look down at the SMS?
-
Do I need to go to dogfight mode to use AIM-9X’s effectively, or can I stay in A-A mode? I want to say that I’ve tried to fire off a few after switching to them (holding MSL Step) in A-A master mode, but they wouldn’t fire when I hit the pickle button. Am I missing something simple?

I’m using a Thrustmaster T-flight Hotas X. In general I like it just fine but the throttle is difficult to adjust finely. I’ve only done one refueling successfully so far and I had to tease the speedbrakes instead of modulating the throttle to stay in position. Unfortunately the hud doesn’t show the speedbrake position. Any thoughts on how to do fine control for refueling?
Any tips for moving on from here would be appreciated.
And a couple of bugs I’ve noticed too. There seems to be a memory leak if you go into dogfight mode many times over and over. Eventually the little memory status window comes up and it crashes soon after. Also sometimes when I start another round it’ll use the default starting range of 20nm even though I left the slider at 40nm. Exiting the fight and re-entering fixes that.
Thanks! Looking forward to many missions ahead.

Don’t order weapons free. When he asks you to shoot, order him to kick out then order him to shoot.
Yes u must look at the HUD or SMS to recall what u selected.
For the aim 9 you must uncaged it first. For AA refuel put gun cross on the boom edge and very very gentle corrections.

Save/load defaults to DTC for switches does not work with IDM continuous. This is a feature I always wanted to have.

If you have HMCS on you get XSRM-S (for rear aspect heaters) and XHOB-S (for all aspect heaters) and X is the number of missiles left. This works in all A-A, Dogfight and MRM modes. This is also available on HUD during A-A or MRM modes but NOT in dogfight mode.

I would recommend the dogfight mode for sidewinders, because it automatically sets FCR into ACM mode and HUD gets decluttered which makes it convenient for dogfight.
Sidewinders are always hot just like mavericks. They will always be fired when pickle is pressed regardless of target acquisition or cage/uncage status or A-A/DGFT/MRM mode. Check if you have master arm set properly for missile to be released.
- I am using the same HOTAS stick. I always had trouble with the detent at central position especially during refueling. So I have set it as afterburner detent in settings. It shortens the movement but its a compromise which works for me.
Then practice…… Practice… Practice… Nothing else works for refueling. Get a decent armrest, relax the death grip and make gentle corrections.

I have used the T-flight HOTAS and the CH Fighterstick and Throttle combo and now have the Warthog HOTAS. Bottom line: you get what you pay for. I had a hell of a time re-fueling with the T-flight, mixed success with the CH products and have found Nirvana with the Warthog, which makes is much, much easier to refuel vs. the other two sticks.

Make sure your AIM-9s are cooled!
Cheers!

Thanks. I figured that out today. A-A mode does not cool them by default, but MSL and DGFT modes do!

And for AIM9 turn up the volume. You don’t want to be in engagement with a Mig-23 when you are being told to shoot and you say you don’t have a f*ckin tone as you didn’t turn up the volume!
