Gunfights at night
-
Just need a bit tactical advise on how to do gunfights at mid of night. If I use NVG, then my view blanks out at HUD due to the light emitted by HUD. But if I take off my NVG, it’s difficult to spot targets in the night and keep track of their flying attitude. Just wonder how you do it?

Best advice I can give on “gun fights” night or day - use technology and tactics to avoid them :wfish:
Who wants to die an heroic death when there’s plenty of beer left in the squad bar ???

What Ironman says. But in principle you can, set HUD switch to night, turn off instrument lighting and flood lights, turn down RWR and DED lighting, turn the HUD brightness all the way back to whatever’s comfortable with NVG’s, and hope for the best. Given your amount of posts here you probably know all that already though

During nights flights, a general advice is to make your room as dark as possible, and set your in-game panel brightness as low as possible, meaning just bright enough to read it, and don’t use your global cockpit illumination.
If you use a TGP or weapon view, use BHOT or TV instead of WHOT, so your MFD is less bright.IRL, you would do such things to help maintain your “night eyes” (same reason some countries don’t allow you turn on your reading light while driving the car at night), and also reduce reflection and glare in the canopy. In-game, it helps with not blanking out the NODs.
-
Agree with others above …. avoidance is the best tactic.

Is there any way to make the 20mm catriges tracer? It helps at night a lot.

The best way to get better at gun fighting at night……gun fight at night!!! I get in real life the best tactic is avoidance but this is just a simulation (the best one out there mind you!!) and simulations are excellent for trying out all possibilities, even the opportunity to see what works best when it comes to gun fighting at night. Do your research like I know you probably are, take that information into the sim, and use all of it and see what works best for you. If your looking for the thrill of the gunfight using the avoidance tactic will obviously lower your chances rather dramatically of actually getting into a fur ball.
Also iirc If you turn your hmcs on and turn your hud off I believe the hmcs the show up when your looking straight forward through the hud.

If you turn off hud, would your hmcs show the gun pipper?

Nope. Just the TD Box around the target.

The HMSC has three settings (levels); to appearing when looking outside only, appearing when outside and inside (and not hud) and all the time, when looking anywhere, including overlapping the HUD. You can access the HMCS setting levels through your ICP menu’s: LIST > ZERO > ENTER.
PS: Turning off the HUD is something I personally would never do because it greatly enhances (in a bad way) the PIO risk and loss of SA.
When strafing at night, I would put in the coordinates and strafe in AG mode, radar alt and shoot at the TD box (and don’t get target fixated lawn dart). -

Depends on the situation. Not in any tactical situation if you can help it, but for training purposes, it’s useful to turn off the HUD from time to time while doing AAR, formation flying, instrument flying, visual or instrument approaches, …

It’s not that I don’t like to rely on tech and keep bad guys at arm’s length. I am in a pretty tough situation. I am on a BARCAP mission to protect 4 flights of a-10’s on a mission to stop a Chinese 5-battalion counter attack to the north of Pyong-Yan. I thought it would be easy cuz most nearby airbases have been neutralized. But to my surprise, the Red put out 5 flights to counter me. The first 2 su-27’s are easy. Then 2 Mig-29’s. By then my stupid wingman is dead. Next comes a flight of 4-ship Su-30. By the time I dealt with them, I am windchester. But slow A-10’s are just arriving to prosecute ground targets. Then a flight of 4-ship Mig-23’s show up from nowhere. I can go guns on 2-3 mig-23’s no problem in daylight. But night time really messes me up. That’s why I am here to see if anyone has gun fight at night experience. Also, can I order wingman to stay at certain waypoint to chill rather than following me around? If I can do that then I can put his 4xaim-120’s to good use without sacrificing him.

Don’t expect too much of it, but I have a bit of a gun fight in this night DCA video. FWIW.

Not with AI. To do that, you need to have human wingmen that are slightly more intelligent than their AI counterpart (hopefully ).
-
Just turn on your NVG’s and turn down brightness of bloody everything, interior, mfd’s., even HUD, so you will see through … you know, make comfortable romantic ambient … and then watch some air-pron from the others, how they do it.
Me personally, … there is no difference, day or night…, every dogfight is kinda unique… they start different, and they all end the same. Splash… … or run.

Nice shot. You prolly used night time HUD, didn’t you? My HUD was a lot worse. I am gonna try that tonight to see if it helps.

Actually, no. If you look at 1.16, you can see it’s set to DAY. It is on the lowest brightness setting, though.
-
Wait. how do adjust brightness again? I just know for every HUD’s color, there is a lower brightness version. Is that what you talking about? Also, can you adjust NVG’s brightness?
