Mission target already destroyed
-
I have noticed that some of the HQ generated missions recently have me tasked with attacking a target, say a bunker or hanger etc, and when I recon the target it is already destroyed. The target in the recon list is shown as destroyed and I can see that it is destroyed in the Recon screen.
Any ideas why HQ would have me attack a target already destroyed? A simple error on HQ’s part or something else?

I have seen the same and if you accept the mission it fails because no damage is done to the target site. The last time it happened I took the escort mission instead and it also failed because no damage was done to the target.
Another similar problem occurs with tasking in the air, the other day I was passing waypoint two on a barcap and a long way to go to my patrol area when I was told to engage a four ship at a bullseye that was more than 100 miles away 90 degrees to my flight path. If I would have engaged we wouldn’t have had enough gas to do the mission, probably low on ordanance and never make it to the patrol area on time. I have had similar requests while in the patrol area that direct me out of my area and I get a fail because I left the assigned area. So now if the call is too far out of my flight path or out of my area I reply “Unable” and that seems to shut them up and so far I haven’t noticed any penalities for doing that. Not sure if this is the correct thing to do though.

Don’t get hung up on the pass/fail of missions… especially if you return safely to home plate… diverting to intercept a two ship Fulcrum escort which cause the SU25s to abort is way more important. You could have just been circling for 30 minutes at your patrol point while they whacked an airbase… it’s all about attrition… Bomb them back to the Stone Age and move on… While at the 19th hole, sit back and ask yourself if YOU were successful.

I think you do want to focus on mission success. Sure, destroying anything and everything helps. But nothing you can destroy on a single sortie will match the effect that having a good pilot rating has for the campaign as a whole.
The answer, I think, is to frag your own missions. Not only will you avoid any missions with already-destroyed targets, you can tailor what you fly to the things you’re best at, thereby keeping your rating high and as a result the entire Blue force will fight better theater-wide.

Usually several flights are directed to the same target, when I notice that happens, I forget about synchronising my flight with the rest of the package, and fly directly and quickly to the target, so I can be the first arriving and attacking.-

I generally don’t care about my logbook too much. There have been times when I’m tasked with destroying an enemy battalion and get a fail because I hit the wrong battalion. Sometimes the sim gets a little screwed up and as long as I’m hitting enemy units that’s all that matters to me.

Mission and pilot performance evaluations are just evaluations of what happened and not a judgement of what you should have accomplished given the situation. Remember it’s not a video game with fair challenges that you’re a good boy if you pass and a bad boy if you fail.
If your mission is to bomb something and another flight gets there first then it fail, but failing isn’t bad. If a target is important then redundant strikes are tasked. Not every mission will succeed; they aren’t intended to. It’s not because the ATM is an infallible genius but it’s a byproduct of how the sausage is made. There’s always parts to an objective to hit more even if the limited list on the recon all shows destroyed. If you don’t want a milk run then skip it.
