Frustrated with GBUs and JDAMs

I’ve been able to get both types on target just fine….until today. Not sure what’s going on, but a little help or guidance would be appreciated.
I flew several campaign missions today and, suddenly, can’t get the bombs to drop off the plane. I didn’t over-G the plane (I don’t think?). I simply took off and flew steerpoints to the target, never engaged and had to maneuver.
I think I’ve got it set-up right (I am new, but have been successfully implementing them till now), but double-check me:
- In A-G mode
- CCRP
- SMS bombs powered ON (for JDAM)
- Laser Armed
- Laser in Combat mode
- Laser code in DED matches code in Data Cartridge
- Master ON
- Target is locked with TGP, or am lasing it
- I have target steerpoint Lat/Longs entered and am flying right over top of it, on fall line, straight-and-level flight.
- Holding pickle down…the first line drops, circle flashes, countdown timer is counting down, second line drops…timer reaches zero aaaaaand starts counting back up with bombs on the wings. I’m about to pull my hair out, lol.:doh:
What gives? I read a thread a few minutes ago about lofting and, while a different procedure, it was mentioned to not pickle until the circle starts flashing. Could that be it?

It seems you pickle too early, with LGBs or JDAMs forget about the flashing circle, etc, you must do it when the range caret reaches the upper part of the DLZ.

Press the pickle about 2 - 3 seconds before the release timer hits 0. Or, if a DLZ is present (as above), be sure the caret is inside of the upper range of the DLZ.

BTW, first timer and flashing reticle is for loft delivery. For non-lofting, ignore the first cue and wait for the second one …. then hold the pickle only for last ~2 seconds before the release cue (use the timer in the HUD).

Edit,BTW, first timer and flashing reticle is for loft delivery. For non-lofting, ignore the first cue and wait for the second one … then hold the pickle only for last ~2 seconds before the release cue (use the timer in the HUD).

All are loftable? I mean u don’t loft an lgb from what I know. Mostly it’s for free fall iron bombs, and lofting I don’t think it’s so popular. So instead of showing it for lofting operations they just show it all the time?

Why wouldn’t you loft an LGB? I can come up with some situations where it can be pretty useful… Do you expect the forward motion to mess up the guidance-control aerodynamics or something like that?
Now that we have a topic on LGB’s… I was wondering about this the other day: In the LASR DED page you can, if you want to, change the lead time before impact in which the laser will be on. I seem to get a much better hit-rate (never missed since actually) when I increase this number to 20s. This makes sense as the LGB has a lot more time to correct for errors in the drop. However… isn’t this soft-cheating? Does anyone have a figure on how long (or better, how far away) an LGB will be able to track? And does BMS take this into account?

Yup …… lofting LGB’s and/or JDAMs can be very effective.
IIRC, we (former VFW) had some advice from someone with RL experience to always (not just lofting) set the laser timer in the DED to 150 seconds. Basically begin lasing immediately, not just during the last portion of flight. If so, then no, increasing to 20 or 30 seconds wouldn’t be a ‘soft cheat’.

Who knows why it’s designed the way it is, other than the BMS devs and/or Lockheed-Martin. Assuming that the BMS representation is faithful to the LM reality, why wouldn’t it be included, regardless of your/our perception of utility or simple-ness or excess information?

I dont think setting the laser timer to 150 seconds is a good idea, I always thought that lasing too early flattens the LGB trajectory, not letting it to follow its ballistic calculated curve, so making it loose energy and fall short.

Paveway II in some situations yes. Most trajectories it’s not a big deal. Paveway III is smarter not to cut the corner.

Rather than speculate and confuse people with real-life versus BMS discussions please refer to the BMS-Training manual, where the LGB chapter clearly states that 16 to 20 seconds works well in BMS 4.33.
While the LGB modelling in 4.33 is an improvement over 4.32 (where bombs would sometimes increase in speed to meet the time on target), it gets even more realistic in the next version

Perhaps it happens because the main diference is the fins control system, which is proportional in the newer versions
