Raising gear handle before takeoff

Seems all the RL cool pilots do it,
To be correct, you have to replace the word “cool” with the word “stupid”.

ya, I meant to be sarcastic in my tone there. Stupid is a more accurate word for it as well as irresponsible and reckless.

In RL, I personally witnessed the aftermath of a guy doing this…when the jet came back on the back of a flatbed with three scraped up external tanks still attached to it and the gear up. Seems that being WOW and actually airborne at certain GWTs aren’t always the same thing…scenario: gear handle - UP, enough lift for WOW/not enough lift to fly…gear come up, jet settles into runway for lack of flying speed. Doubt this particular guy kept his wings…
…don’t do this, kids.

Good advice, when selecting gear up the Viper configuration changes from T.O./LAND configuration to normal flight configuration, so flaperons an LEF’s move up and less lift is produced. Not the smartest thing to do at slow speed [emoji6]

I just had to shake my head at this thread. I mean , I just fly sims, yet I make sure I’m off the deck and going up before raising the gear! Why do RL pilots do this? Even in a combat takeoff situation, potential gains vs. potential losses don’t seem worth it.

Some Type “I” think this is being Type “A”.

There is no gain to doing this and I assume a pilot never would. As stated earlier the flaps come up with the gear so you are in fact changing the entire configuration of the aircraft. This is extremely dangerous close to the ground as the aircraft is still in ground effect and may not be climbing yet. Gear should only ever come up with two positive rates of climb and when safely able.

It looks like a common problem
-
Raise the gear when showing a positiive rate of climb.
-
Funny how in early sims it was actually better to raise gear very early.
It was always as if plane got less drag and felt lighter so easier to climb.
Also because of the great acceleration you had to be careful not to over speed and get stuck gears:lever: -
Yes, pilots do that:
Open gear doors on this type mean gear is already being retracted. It’s why it’s scary to fly as a passenger.

Retracting the gear on most aircraft will not raise the flaps as well. So you aren’t losing lift like raising the gear on the viper. The gear is just drag so the faster you get it up the better. However the flaps coming up at the same time means you’re losing lift extremely close to the ground and is not a situation you want to find yourself in.
-
Remember, it’s not a fighter with its TWR and even with extended flaps it doesn’t fly well at such speeds.

Not before firmly ensuring a positive rate of climb, not right at the time the wheels are off the ground.
