COMM3 … what for and when?
-
Saw some pics with an additional COMM3 switch on the panel… anyone knows what it is about? I can imagine it is a radio used for data transmitting or something like this, or does newer version use COMM3 instead of backup UHF? Also a option…
Maybe someone knows more or is allowed to say more

My guess would be SATCOM
-
Correct.
Some Vipers (IAF Sufa) already have a 3rd radio, controllable from the rear pit, and IIRC should be a SATCOM as the antenna is installed on the top of the dorsal spine, behind canopy.
Also new antennas are installed to upgraded Vipers to support this.
Link-16 also uses a dedicated stand-alone radio (so practically its a 3rd). Don’t know though if it is technically possible (or permitted) to be modified and be used as a standard radio too.

3D audio on an airplane.
Oh the mother of all facepalm?Well my friend,
3D audio in pilot’s helmet is a must nowadays, first implementation was by TERMA some years ago for their RWR/ECM suites, to help pilot quicker ID a threat and its position in 3D space / horizon…
If you search around you’ll find more resources.

Go add it on the wish-list now…

my understanding of what they mean by 3d audio is panned spatial representations, so for instance, left ear means broadcast is to your left, right ear means broadcast is to your right. Lockheed talked about getting this into the 6th gen well back in the 90s. They envision chatter coming up from the ground being represented three dimensionally with panning to help get the airborne asset or anyone on the frequency oriented nearly instantaneously towards the broadcast.
