No guns using Thrustmaster Fox 2 Pro stick
-
At the risk of posting a dumb question, here goes:
I followed the instructions for installing BMS 4.33 to the letter, and when I try to fly in any part of the simulator (Instant Action, Campaign or whatever) I am not able to figure out how to fire my guns. I have pressed every button on my Fox 2 Pro joystick, re-calibrated it, installed the alternate launcher. The button works, but I just can’t fire guns.
Anyone have any ideas? I’m hoping it’s something simple that I’ve forgotten to do. I’m new to BMS, and am very interested in learning this.
Thanks!

Yes for AG. But not AA.
You’re in DGFT mode in AA and master arm on?

Guns fire with second trigger detent. Make sure you are using the correct callback.

When I go into SETUP in the game, pressing the trigger shows detent 1 on the Fox 2 Pro.
I have googled and googled to try to figure out how to change this, but I can’t come up with the answer. I’ve found guides for other joysticks but I have no idea how to change this with my modest setup.
Can someone point me to where I need to go? I’m planning on reading the manual over the course of the next few weeks, but there’s nothing in there that shows how to switch the trigger from detent 1 to detent 2.
Thanks…

Its kinda tricky because ‘pro’ TM sticks, aside yours, have ‘dual-trigger’ action as a real plane. So that are two DX buttons in one switch, half-way and full-way pressed in. That are those - 1st detent , 2nd detent.
In sim they corresponds do DX buttons 1 and 6 (or 0 and 5, if you count from 0 - in .key file)… so…Guns are ‘opening’ on the 2nd detent, full stage press, that is button DX6 ., so look on your stick for 6th button in order , there is your gun.
So you just have to reassign button DX1 to that 2nd detent (from the 1st detent) , and the gun will be on your trigger press.
You loose 1st detent that way , but it is kinda not a big loss, because it is mainly (only?) used in AG mode for manual lasing, firing laser… which, is kinda advanced technique, so at first, not so crucial , you could live without it
Preferably you should edit .key file you are using , with npp++ text editor and change that manually … those settings are somewhat down at 2/3rd’s of the file (can’t tell exactly, don’t know what .key file you are using),
but look for the following lines:SimTriggerFirstDetent 0 -1 -2 0 0X0 124
…
SimTriggerSecondDetent 5 -1 -2 0 0X0 313so you should REM the #SimtriggerFirstDetent , and replace 5 with 0 in: SimTriggerSecondDetent 0 -1 -2 0 0X0 313
That will do the trick, nothing complicated.

I thought I replied to this in addition to thanking you, but it didn’t show up…odd.
Anyway, I did the edits you suggested and it worked, but not right away.
I went into Instant Action after I edited the BMS FULL .key file in Notepad, and when I first entered the cockpit I had no guns. Once I pressed the ‘d’ key I had guns. Dogfight Mode.
I have to spend a lot of time reading the manual.
Before I do that, I have two quick questions.
- Is there any more configuration I need to do with this dated TM Fox 2 Pro joystick? OR…
- Should I just get another? Would that save me time and headache?
I appreciate your help. The guns look great, by the way! Way better than the old version…
Thanks…

Just my humble opinion having flown BMS since 2013 - at least a HOTAS? Have you mapped TMS/DMS yet?

No, I haven’t. Had to look up the acronyms you just mentioned, so no I haven’t done that. I’ve never used a throttle, always just keyboard and joystick. Maybe it’s time…

AMEN brother! and yeah while you won’t need that 1st trigger detent for lasing/buddy lasing until WAY down the road, if ever, TMS/DMS is pretty much mandatory for the F16/BMS sim.

Well, YES probably, every stick is ‘special’ in its own way, number of buttons, axis, even control layers - shifted functions, … and configuring that shifted function layers is school of its own alone, it can be done on hardware layer via control software of the joystick itself and/or via BMS shifted layer function … you’ll have to warm up the chair like in school
…but, you’ll get more buttons on the stick, true meaning of HOTAS -
ha!,… tempting as always… to feel hands on ‘cold metal’ Cougar or Warthog, expensive too. … IMHO, learn (try and fail) configuring that stick you own at the moment, after 6mo…1yr or so, if you find out it desn’t feel adequate, well, start thinking about decent replacement
Can’t quite be more specific about your stick, never had hands on it, never felt it.
But, even, knowing that it is a TM stick, it probably has some decent configuration options through TARGET software, …
p.s. TMS/DMS hats… (even TRIM hat, once you comfortable with hotas enough) are IRREPLACEABLE,… While DMS could be replaced with keyboard, TMS is a must on the stick., it is a combat simulation after all and those are packed with targets , and TMS is nothing more then in short for ‘Target Management’
…
Gun didn’t work because?: Master arm OFF, NAV mode selected, GUN not selected weapon in AA/MRM mode … and so on … you’ll get to the point.
Gun works while in ‘Dogfight’ mode, after ‘d’ keypress: Of course, it is by design for gun to work on the fly in that specific mode override by just selecting it, it even auto-cool’s seekers on heat-seekers (and drinks in portable fridge, for pilot’s refreshment)Yeah, welcome to virtual flying school.
