[ATC] What am i supposed to do exactly when requested to "orbit for spacing"?
-
See title.
I know it’s to get time/space because of another landing aircraft in front of you, but is there specific ways to orbit (other than flying large circles what i do) ?
And should i recontact ATC after some time flying circles or will they pick me up again?
Sometimes i get the impression they forgot about me and other aircraft are being pulled in before me.
Also, if bypassing the command, just landing savagely, or declaring an emergency (although i dont have one) will it reflect on my campaign score?

If you want to bypass ATC and not get scolded call autonomous.

… with the risk (depending on amount of a/c in queue) of never being properly spaced with other traffics and never get a landing clearance.
“Orbit for spacing” means you have to hold on present position 30-45° bank right turn (IIRC) at ordered altitude. And wait for further instructions until your QGP arrives for approach.

In 4.33, i find that if you folow ATc instructions, that it goes smoothly, speeds and altitude. Works very well and you get much satisfaction out of it.

Perhaps I’ve just gotten lucky 1500 times
It’s a matter of congestion. There are a few things you can do to mitigate it. The best thing is to base yourself at a field that has dual parallel runways. Kimpo is a good example. One runway is used for departures, and one for recoveries so ATC flow is maximized.
Another thing to look for is number and size of the other squadrons based there. Picking a base that has several Viper squadrons along with say A-10s and other ships will add to congestion and lead to landing delays.
When returning to base you can get a feel for what’s ahead of you by tuning in to the tower frequency and listening to the AI making landing requests. If you hear several callsigns, and four in each, it’s going to be crowded. You can either attempt to get in front of them, go divert, or simply wait your turn (or call autonomous)

Perhaps the proper questions should be like

Break out the piddlepack. If you didn’t bring any, well……

What you’re supposed to do is …
DL 4.34 and start over.
Whole new ballgame.

My recommendation when it comes to all things ATC is: watch what the AI flight members do. Record a TacView track and see what happens. In general make circles just outside about 10nm in the 6-10kft altitude block near the “T” entry points to the active runway. Maybe 4.34 is different so I give qualitative advice only.
