Engaging multiple targets with aim-120 simultaneously

Strongly recommend the BMS4.34 manuals, particularly: Falcon BMS 4.34\Docs\TO-BMS1F-16CM-34-1-1.pdf, page 34 onwards.
For a quick reference to the different symbology for missiles in flight etc, page 76 of the same document.

So I designate a target, launch, designated the 2nd target and launch, correct?
And if i want to see when each missile goes pitbull, do I switch to this target with TMS-left?
u get to timers on the bottom of the HUD. I strongly recommend doing it in RWS mode just as u describe it on your first post
-
I wrote it just from the top of my head… but I can not switch TMS-R targets for multitargeting in RWS IIRC (I fly still 4.33 U5 on notebook).

RWS is for SA, when you just want to see whether something is out there or not. For BVR combat, you want TWS. You don’t need to update fast at this range, but extra information it gives you is invaluable.
-
You Designate, launch, designate/switch, launch etc.
And you switch targets by pressing TMS Right. TMS Left does the IFF interrogation.
Pitbull time/symbology is displayed on the FCR. You don’t have to switch targets for that, just take a look on the FCR.
Well i reread the entire chapter for both the radar and aim-120…
Apparently you must switch targets to see A/F pole cues for each as will as flight time.
Se pg.169 -
yes of course TMS-right(!!!)
theoretically i can launch up to 6 missiles.
will pitbull data for all will appear simultaneously on the FCR?I proffer to watch the HUD I usually revenuer to keep the hostile on my 2/10
You have to be in TWS to maintain track files on 6 launches.
RWS/TTT will allow two targets bugged/tracked at the same time.
Your DLZ/Pitbull will be for the current bugged target (i.e. whichever missile is targeted on your current bugged contact).
IIRC …. it’s been a while.
-
So isnt necesary to wait until pitbull state after each launch ? Does every missile launched in sequence maintains data link contact previous to become autonomous ?
-
No and yes. The F-16 can support up to 6 AIM-120 simultaneously. It should be practiced 2, 4, and then 6 missile launches. The primary difficulty is having that many targets within launch range at one time and keeping all radar contacts tracking.
-
Yeah, it’s pretty rare to run into a situation where you’ll actually need to launch all six Slammers in quick succession. I think the most I’ve ever had in the air at once was four. Unless you set up your own TE specifically for that, enemies won’t typically line up neatly as to give you a good shot at all six.

May not be realistic but alot of fun none the less. [emoji5]

Was that a blue on blue right at the end?

The track quality isnt great in TWS, either. Would generally recommend using DT SAM over TWS when possible.

tws in bvr cries out BoB if u have teammates in the fcr field of regard
-
My switchology practice is TTS for shooting 2 AIM-120. The primary reason is that you can’t accidentally step onto a target other than you wanted to die. And I believe TTS is superior to TWS for those two targets as well.
-
If all you have to deal with is two targets, then DT SAM is indeed superior. Though TWS will get a Slammer to pitbull, too, and after that you don’t care if your track quality is crap.
-
U must be in TWS.
No you don’t. Try it in RWS, it works …. what is called two target lock RWS-SAM? Something like that. I do it all the time , TWS is confusing - when lots of targets around, if not previous defined 2nd target you never know what target is next priority ,… but it is helpful sometimes.
Also switching to TWS from RWS breaks already defined 2 target lock sequenece done in RWS , it shouldn’t … not big deal. -

OK, you are right…it works just fine with two targets.
I was flying Nordic TE with two gripens vs 4 bandits too much
I agree in dense campaigns RWS multitargeting is much more safe regarding courtmartial… -

This may be the case in BMS, but IRL the slammer doesnt just ignore the radar information from the launcher when it gets to active range. The highest probability of kill is from an STT track maintained all the way until impact.
Of course, BMS has its differences in this regard.

From RWS, putting the ACQ over a contact and TMS up once puts the radar into ST SAM. ST SAM is basically RWS, but additionally searching a smaller volume than RWS can, while also monitoring the tracked target, with dwell times far lower than STT. Placing the ACQ over another contact, and a single TMS up, puts the radar in DT SAM, and the radar will monitor both tracked targets, while continuing to search using RWS.
If the radar workload increases, or one of the contacts gets too close, the radar will switch automatically into another mode, probably DTT, depending on which radar is installed and which tape is installed.
