SA-10 Killing me with no Missile Warning
-
Don’t go into SA 10 rings (50 Nm from radar). If you see one mud (inner circle RWR), you may have one guided on you and a few seconds to hit the deck. Terrain will save you from the sa10 and get you killed by the rest.
-
Dont believe Lorik, he is french.
Go inside a SA-10 envelope at low level.
Take an escort (not SO) JAM platform with you and a DEAD section, if you need to.
Use ECM blinking techniques.
Avoid overflying cities due to SHORAD.
Use terrain for cover.
Loft your iron bombs (no AGM or INS WPNs)
Be a man, be a wild weasel! -
10s don’t set off your RWR as far as launch is concerned. Some folks claim there is a slight variation in the chirp. By the time you sit pondering whether there is a difference, you’ll be meeting your maker. Like Lorik said, if the 10 is in the inner ring, dive for your life and run for the hills

Haha !

The 10 on the outer circle is the ewr not so much to worry about but you know you are one his scope
The ewr is transmitting to the fcr the search information so the fcr will wait that you come in range to turn on
That is the 10 in your inner circle , that means there is a 90% chance a missile is on you in the next seconds
Only way to avoid is terrain you can’t defeat a sa10 on kinematic
A JAM ac in the area is a must
-
Sure that little 10 is on my RWR and has been for a while
Don’t go there . Someone else will go instead !
A JAM ac in the area is a must
True . So let him go first .
-
Yeah, the SA-10 is a monster. If you see “10” in the inner RWR circle, your best bet is to dive for the deck, firewall the throttle, turn away and hope you’re not in its no escape zone. This and terrain masking is your only recourse. Best just to avoid the thing. SA-10s are generally deployed at those big radar stations.
And now for the funny thing: BMS doesn’t model all capabilities of the SA-10, including two other search radars it uses, advanced anti-HARM tactics it can do and the ability to shoot down cruise missiles. If these ever get modeled, it’ll get much worse.
-
A JAM ac in the area is a must
Too bad that BMS doesn’t feature the radar hacking like the “Suter” .
It could be the best way to get rid of SA-10, as USA and Israel know well ….
Send the ground troops in the area if possible . They must take the objective .

I love SA-10s because they are an absolute nightmare and really illustrate how lethal air defense can be. Nasty little bastards they are.
Loriks revised Balkans Campaign (I forget the exact name of which operation) has you running CAS and bombing runs on rebels that took over several SA-10s and you learn to respect them very quickly after getting plucked out of the sky.
Going after one is like the final boss in most other games. Taking them out is super serious, super dangerous, and super fun. I think it’s the best experience BMS offers.
Come in fast as fk, low as fk, MK82 AIRs is what I use, one pass , haul all the asscheek you can muster and coordinate multiple packages / flights for one. Expect losses. Memorize valleys you can use, and I will plot a flight plan (in the Balkans) using valleys and dipping around mountains.
Chaff won’t save you but I dump all I got anyway. I start a few miles out and just let it all

Be a man, be a wild weasel!we’re French in 2000s and we do exactly as you describe
-
Oh also, you’ll get to see misinformed people telling you to use your ECM to counter a sa10. Sa10 missiles have home on jamming. Every time your jammer emits, they see it and guide on it. Don’t believe anyone, make your own experience.
-
ECM blinking is not your “ECM turn on and hope for the best”…as you probably know it.

The French thing was simply me trying to make a joke on Lorik….don’t take it too serious.

LOL
I really pissed you off, didn’t I. Sorry for that…not my intention…Just teasing. If you knew me you certainly would know I know what I am talking about wild weaseling etc. Have nice day. -
I also remember other behaviors of this beast, although I’m not sure if this was modeled differently in older versions of BMS.
The time when China enters the war I try to take out Shenyang or Liuhe airbases sneaking in along the western part of the map to have much water on my route.
On rare occasions I saw a 10 on my RWR very short, then nothing for minutes. Suddenly my RWR went off with a missile warning and an instant later BAMMM!
I also was hit without any warning or 10 on RWR when flying higher. I asked myself if this was a lucky artillery hit, seeing in the debriefing it was an SA-10.Is it in BMS 4.34 always the case you see the 10 and have to watch if it is in outer or inner ring?
SA-10 and -20 are S-300P. I always wonder what S-400 (SA-21) are capable of
-
SA-21 was initially S-300PM-3 before it was renamed S-400 (hype bonus). PM-1/2 are SA-20, PS and PT are SA-10.
SA-20 is midway between SA-21 & SA-10. Main improvements of SA-21 are electronics and fire-control wise (harder-faster-better-stronger, basically) and the employment of an increased variety of missile types to be able to engage threats the most efficiently possible way within all the battery’s area of responsibility.

Wild weaseling is a real life concept, wild weaseling an SA-10 with dumb bombs is a BMS concept. Which I probably enjoy since it’s one the most recurring topics on my YT channel. Not something I’d particularly recommend to someone who just realize what an SA-10 is, though.

You can read more deeply if you wish to know the S-300/400 family.
