SmoothTrack

Not sure how many out there have seen this but it looks fairly promising.
It is a facetracking app only available on iOS at the minute but the developer is talkng about making an Android version. Available for download from the app store for £4.99.
You need to download OpenTrack and link them together then it should work just like TrackIR etc. but will utilise the phone’s camera. If you already own a supported iPhone or iPad this could be a cheaper alternative.
You can see a review and it in action here https://www.pcgamesn.com/microsoft-flight-simulator/head-tracking-app

Very interesting, thanks for the heads-up.

Dev has released it and its also available on Android for 10 bucks.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epaga.smoothtrackDefinitely interested, but missed the beta where it was $5. Curious if anyone has tried it? I also have TrackIR with a battery to go wireless, but if this SmoothTrack works and there is no longer a need to wear something on my audio headset or ball cap, that would be killer! Plus, wonder if SmoothTrack would work during day with ambient light in the room. TrackIR of course, does not… All in all, promising and great idea given the use of a smart phone camera to hook in head tracking!

Looks indeed promising - what I don´t get is why he doesn´t use his facetracking technology in conjunction with a simple webcam. Much easier to mount at line of sight and smaller footprint. No need for all this wireless IP stuff also.
Maybe because of licensing….

i picked up Smoothtrack the other day and tried it out. Actually works pretty well with BMS once tweaks in OpenTrack are worked out to allow nice view range with pilot body enabled. What is nice with SmoothTrack is there is no longer a need to mount the TrackIR clip/wires/battery to my wireless audio headset. I simply place my phone in front of me and go! it also works well in daylight as well as low light, whereas TrackIR fails in daylight. Granted, its precision is not as good as TrackIR, but for the price and the ease of use, along with no additional hardware on my headset, it works quite well. For $10 its recommended!
Note, i also tried it in all other TrackIR supported games I have and it works well… especially nice for Arma3 and the natural head tracking flows nice with steam controller movement/action…, similar with StarCitizen. -
I also just installed SmoothTrack. This is my first time using any kind of head tracking. It was picked up in Falcon without any tweaking from me, aside from installing SmoothTalk on my Android and OpenTrack on my PC. I’m finding it rather difficult to use because there is a small but noticeable delay between me shifting my head position and the software moving the view. Also, viewing the left and right consoles in the cockpit is difficult because of how much I have to turn my head left/right and downward, while still looking at the screen. I changed all the settings I can find but haven’t found something I was comfortable with. I’m wondering if this delay is what separates it from the more expensive options. I’m considering getting a refund because in this state its far easier to use my left thumbstick to control head movement. However this could be just my inexperience and I welcome any input.

If you have the feel you have to move your head to much in order to see the consoles use the curves in Opentrack to translate less physical moment to more in game movement

The problem with that is then every small movement gets picked up and I have to keep my head very still. I’m trying to set up deadzones using the Mapping function in OpenTrack but I can’t seem to find a setting I am comfortable with. Head tracking might not be for me though. Panning around with the thumbstick on my Logitec G13 seems more natural. It was good to give it a try though.

Thank you for sharing this, this is fantastic! Sometimes I don’t want to get the headphones on, camera set up, not to mention the velcro on my DelanClip is peeling off in the warmer temperatures.

1. You may try Aitrack instead of Smoothtrack. In combination with Droidcam can be used with phone as well and gave better results in my test with pure face tracking than Smoothtrack
2. The best results in headteacking is by using an active IR Tracker (works in any light conditions) in combination with a high FPS cam such as the the PS3eye.I have build a bunch of #2 solutions. Depending if with a wired or wireless/rechargeable track clip I spend between 10 - 25 €. And the result is comparable if not even better than a 180€ TIR5

Thanks for the input, I’ll consider other options when I come back to it. I’m very cautious about spending anything more on it now, since its not nearly as good as I imagined it to be in my head.

Just a quick post to say SmoothTrack (in combination with OpenTrack) works quite well in Falcon BMS. The curves (in OpenTrack) might need a bit of tweaking but that shouldn’t be too difficult. The 10 euros (I’m using the Android version on Samsung Galaxy S10) are well worth it!
