Clouds from 2010 vs present version clouds
-
When i created the possibility to give the user the possiblity to add more clouds, i knew it would bring to knee most current configurations.
In this old video from years back (2010 I guess) it shows huge volumetric clouds that drop shadows on the earth and this was run on gpu hardware quite inferior to present day gpu’s.
Compared to bms 4.33

Comparing free falcon and bms is pointless
Did FF have TFR?
Did FF have TGP?
Did FF have Buddy lasing?
Did FF have modern weapons?
Did FF have Advanced avionics?
Did FF have Advanced dynamic weather?
Did FF have MP stability?
Did FF have a manual?
….
I can go on all day longbe happy with what you get, accept the fact that there will be drawbacks, that’s the price to pay for making progress on other aspects.
If you can’t stand the drawbacks, go back to the version of Falcon that didn’t have any

The FF (I’d call it RV, because FF was roughly about data changes only…) clouds in that vid are rendered same as BMS, the only differences are:
Different textures - Probably the FF textures are thicker
Different Size - FF are larger per a cloud BB rendering (BB = Billboards, the clouds are billboards, they are textures that facing you all the time and giving the illusion of 3Dness, it’s a known technique to render 3D-Like stuff)
Different scattering - FF’s seems “Longer”
Different Lighting - BMS lighting system is more advanced because of the usage of shaders. The difference is NOT that great, actually I worked on the “RV” clouds (the FF4 clouds rendering was different) to make them like that, it wasn’t not bad I guess considering the RV GFX engine. The BMS clouds in my eyes are nicer.
BTW there are textures hanging around the place which make your BMS clouds look similar to those in the FF video (thicker), I personally don’t like so much the “thick” rendering as it looks too thick for the fair weather in the sim, IMHO.

This mod may help you along with 4.33’s new weather settings.
Go to the weather setting window and click the cloud tab, move the thickness slider to the left.grb2fmap may also help you to make BMS clouds look more thick.
https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?24349I am using the vanilla textures but it even looks such thicker when I use grb2fmap.

Thank you!

Just ran into this nice implementation of Volumetric clouds. This blog has some nice background and beautiful video showcasing the clouds. Hoping one day to see something like this in BMS. https://blog.uhawkvr.com/rendering/rendering-volumetric-clouds-using-signed-distance-fields/

Clouds looks good but I highly doubt they were volumetric.

Hmmm, those cloud shadows would be good addition

I guess at some point after gfx engine was updated to DX11 nice volumetric clouds with shadows will come to BMS, but I don’t think it has high priority now.
