Navigation and approach with Autopilot
-
Hi all,
I’ve been using the BMS approach plates (thanks Red Dog), to practice IFR landings in very low visibility, and have found the use of AP extremely helpful to follow the fixes. get to the minimums, and roll out of the arc onto finals, where I disengage, switch on ILS, dirty up and follow the director to visual, then visual to the threshold. it gives more freedom to manage the sensors, intercepts and altitude, and compensates for wind and turbulence, and i’m guessing is safer as a result.Be interested in others thoughts on it, and whether an F16 pilot would use it in RL in this way. I believe there are some F18 variants which can have a fully AP assisted recovery.
I made a video to demonstrate this.

Can’t speak for military, but in civilian aviation my company allows the use of autopilot right down to 200 feet. Most guys click it off around 1000 feet because flying is the fun part. Auto pilot is a great tool to lessen the work load.

You do, and I intend to.

ATC response too late.

Hey Fish. In this livestream by a real fighter pilot who flew both the Viper and the Hornet he talks about using auto pilot in IFR. Look about 13:50 in the video mate.

Yep, happy coincidence.
BTW now let’s start placingg bets when there’ll be "not-rotating clouds’ wish on Link16-things list
