HARM training mission: advice please
-
I am practicing my HARM delivery as per the training manual. Following the manual, the targets say “boom” so that’s a good thing.
There’s 2 things I don’t fully understand:
Page 125 of the training manual tells me to
- “confirm it’s (the Pat Hand’s) destruction using the TGP”
and - “the HUD flashes the ASEC”
Questions:
- as far as I have noticed, the TGP does not slave to the tracked SAM radar. What’s the workflow to get the TGP on tgt? (so far I have only worked with a TGP slaved to FCR/STPT, without a full understanding of the system e.g. I have trouble pointing the TGP straight ahead).
- I have no ASEC or HARM LOS indicator in my HUD (as opposed to the image on page 125 of the training manual). Instead, I have the flashing FOV bar as explained on page 208 of the Dash-34. What could be the cause of this?
Maybe (probably… lol) I’m missing something obvious, but I guess I have a bit of tunnel vision while reading the manuals. Any help would be much appreciated!
Heck, I might even become useful to my flight’s after this
- “confirm it’s (the Pat Hand’s) destruction using the TGP”

For stationary SAM sites, the process is to define a target-steerpoint on that spot, in the preflight planning
For mobile SAMs it’s considerably harder… there was a longer thread about using HTS/HAD to create a markpoint or slave TGP… might be of interest.

- Not possible.

Thanks both, I guess the TGP part in the manual relatates to the has and pos part (which ofcourse uses tgt steerpoints).

Well, kinda, not truly , no. When TGP is in STP mode (as with FCR-AG) there’s nothing related to HARM’s in any of modes , pos, has, had. TGP is animal of itself.
It’s POI/SOI is always that selected system steerpoint location. … and Not the sam radar emitting , even if STP is right over that stationary sam. - SO you can’t transfer (at least in BMS) harm target to stp.
So, for “confirming” target destruction in TGP , it is done pure manually, just slew TGP to that given TGT/STP location , where stationary sam is… and watch (the fireworks).

To point your TGP straight ahead without slewing it manually, you can switch radar to snowplow mode and adjust range, TGP will follow. Not sure it will help a lot though.

It would be worth of a try… so why not?
Always better than that usual viewing the target before the missile hit it, however.
With best regards.

Going to give it a try… Want to get rid of Shift-7

If so, TGP could be your chance…
everyone always had the right to have his own likes and dislikes, though.
Good luck, Fluke, and with best regards.

IRL you can get grid resolutions from the HARM, as well as using mark points to just visually reference the AOR. In BMS, the HTS only gives you bulls, as of now. You can use that bulls location to slew the tpod near the spot, but it wont be perfect.
