Any tips for using the Virpil WarBrd base with the TM F-16 joystick?

Spring combos, BMS Config settings, etc? Just ordered the base rather than messing with springs ($$$!) and grease in the stock Warthog base. I don’t have stiction issues but something I just don’t like about the feel of this stick as-is, especially in WWII sims. Of course the Virpil base is on “Back-Order” so no idea when I will actually see it, but as I just ordered the one piece i’m hoping it’s not too long.

I have no advice but I am very pleased with my change of base to the WarBrd for my Cougar.

I have a friend who’s wife (yes, his wife…) has a setup with a Virpil base and Cougar grip…so I know it can be done, but that’s really all I know.
He also says that the hardware is great, but if you end up having to flash the software follow the Virpil instructions to the letter - or you can end up bricking your stick base with no way to recover. Which it seems he’s done at least once…

I have a Virpil T-50CM2 base that I use with the following grips: TM Warthog, TM F/A-18, Virpil T-50CM, and Virpil V.F.X. (F-14). I have mixed feelings about Virpil. The base is an amazing piece of hardware, the sticks feel cool, but I had to get a Virpil base because apparently if you flash a stick (the V.F.X. in this case that I got used) on a Virpil base, it will not work on a Warthog base anymore. Also people have reported the internals on the V.F.X. selector switch is a little iffy. Overall it feels like their construction and internals of the stick grips are a little less than TM, and that’s not just because they are plastic.
I somewhat agree with Stevie’s friend, I haven’t bricked my base but thought I did once and it was nerve-wracking to get back. The software is a little clunky and nerdy but not in the Cougar/Foxy good kind of way.
FWIW, I still use my trusty X65F stick for the Viper and the X65F throttle is still my full time throttle across the grips/stick bases.

Did you just keep the (softer) springs it came with installed? I won’t change the cam as I want it centering. Guess i’ll see if the spring feels good out of the box. Thanks for the heads-up on the software, I assumed it was just going to be plugin/program in Alt-Launcher/play but sounds like it needs drivers or software loaded?

Well that was quick, Virpil just charged my card so I assume (from what I read they charge when they are ready to ship) I should have it soon!

I ordered the virpil warbird base last year for use with my Cougar joystick. I wound up putting in the included heavy springs and detent less cams. Personal preference really but the default springs felt pretty light. I recently found a virpil constellation grip used in good shape and it is matched perfectly to the warbird base as far as feel goes since obviously they are designed for each other. But the cougar F-16 joystick also worked extremely well despite it being heavier than the constellation grip. You will have to install and setup the virpil software to get the warbird up and running either way. Not a huge ordeal, just take your time.

DHL scheduled to arrive with it on June 8th! I’ve been flying WWII birds with this stock Warthog and for the 109 with no aileron trim its a workout!

Enjoy Icer! I definitely have the heavy spring force my TM-50CM2, I believe I have the AviaSim soft center cams. I really love the force level on the stick since I always feel like most sticks don’t have enough resistance, which is understandable since you have to make it for most users that are going use on a desktop. That is one of the things that shines about Virpil’s bases.

Thanks Snake, i’ll try it as-is for a while. I’m coming from close to 25 years with a CH Fighterstick Pro with practically 0 resistance so it may be good to me the way it arrives. Time will tell, nice to have options!

You’re totally right then moving up from CH products! I’ll hand it to them though, they stay put on a desk

Yep… about 2 years ago I upgraded them with magnetoresistive sensors and 12-bit mainboards so they still work perfectly, almost sad to see them sitting in a box now. Maybe i’ll offer them up FS cheap to some lucky guy in the EU…

Arrived today, reset VID\PID, calibrated axis’s, all is well and Win10\TARGET sees it as a Joystick - HOTAS Warthog. VERY smooth action, will try it out tomorrow but BMS/DCS/IL2 all are as they were before the swap…

Have to add that after a good week of a lot of use I LOVE the Virpil base! Smooth as silk, flawless LIGHT movement (stock springs) that I want, could not be happier. Anyone looking for a Warthog Base cheap?

Good to hear! I thought the same thing on the Warthog base, but you may want to keep it. The bases by themselves aren’t worth that much used and I think having it around to get the TM grips back to their original TM EPROM flash could be useful.
