HARM Employment v. SA-15
-
At this point in my campaign, SA-15 is the primary SAM system for the badguys! I killed all the single digit SAMs, TELs and all. Annihilating them has been very satisfying.
So… until bug is fixed, the SOP is carry the HTS.
Yes sir. The drag is hardly noticeable, HTS weighs approximately 80 pounds. No different than just carrying a LANTRIN or SNIPER pod.

Iron Fortress, nothing grand.

In 4.35.1 the SA15 shows up in HAS mode.
But I find it difficult, to kill it, because it usually activates its radar only at very short range and in HAS mode the HARM needs several seconds until “RDY”.
So the SA15 missile is already on its way, when I finally can release my HARM.
It also seems to switch its radar off, when there is no aircraft in short range, so I find it difficult, to get a precise location, while staying outside its engagement zone.
Another problem I’m having is, when I’m at altitude (say 20000ft) I might need to point down the nose of the aircraft, so the HARM seeker get’s a better view of the SA15, due to the short range. -
If you team up with a friend you could act as shooter/suppressor pair. One guy shoots a HARM, the other one shoots a Maverick.
- If the radar stays on, the HARM will hit and destroy it.
- If the SA15 turns off to evade the HARM, the Maverick will hit it
-
Hi StevieG,
I was giving some thought about your proposal:In order for the Maverick to hit, I need to lock up the SA-15 first in either TGP or Weapon view.
If I have it then locked up, I can fire the Maverick pretty much at the edge (or outside) of the SA-15 engagement zone.
In this case, I won’t need the HARM, because I can hit the SA-15 no matter if its radar is On or Off.The problem I see in doing it this way, might be, that you need a precise location of the SA-15, otherwise you cannot lock it up.
This might be difficult, if the SA-15 is grouped together with many other ground targets (e.g. tank battaillons), especially, when they are on the move.
You have to check all ground targets detected by radar and do a visual Id on them.
If you have finally found the SA-15, you can fire the Maverick.Maybe in 3-4 weeks an upgraded version of TGP can do an automated visual Id on all radar targets and identify the SA-15 by using AI and neural networks. The list of targets could then be shared automatically via data link and automatically handed off to the Mavericks …

Who knows? Or better, you just think (in Russian) that the SA15 is destroyed, and boom! Max enjoyment.

Hi StevieG,
The problem I see in doing it this way, might be, that you need a precise location of the SA-15, otherwise you cannot lock it up.This is why you want your buddies Harm in the air. It buys you time to pop up, find, and lock up the TELAR.
-
I will second both your proposals, Gentlemen…
Stevie’s is the wiser move and lets you to keep yourself always on the safe side (if acted correctly, of course).
But that Lorik’s is far better at the top… that “thinking in Russian”, I love it too much.
You made my day, mon ami,so thank you so much. With best regards to all.

Won’t the SA-15 just be able to shoot down a HARM anyway? Those missiles are very fast, mach 2+ I believe, and are made to shoot down PGMs, cruise missiles, other small targets. I think a HARM would be a poor choice against an SA15 unless you had a wingman weaseling for you. Even then, personally, I would rather come in low and fast with snake eyes using terrain masking if possible. I could be wrong though.

If the SA15 location is unknown when it decides to paint you, will you have time to find the target with the Maverick before it launches on you?
-
And this is where you can see who saw the ACMI and who didn’t
-

Probably not, given that the SA15 range is around 12 miles, and those missiles are nigh impossible to dodge.

Good THINKING !! :tinfoil3:

If you’re talking about BMS, this is the demonstration that there is still room for more digging about SAM. And once again, there’s an ACMI right in this thread.
