BMS Other Fighters Mafia (BMSOFM) Journal

did you manage to find a reference for the FM and FLCS?
Hi, Tumbler, Yes we have.
In fact, since I haven’t put in an update for a few days, and without getting carried away ….- We are working on truly refined flight models for the Rhino and Growler, plus further work on the Hornet and EF-18M. This is a “3-4 Mafia Week” type thing, but we are hopeful. For that reason we have decided to not “spin our wheels” on constantly “retweaking” the Rhino’s acdata files. The “RC2” version of the f18e.dat and f18e_afm.dat, now in the Mediafile Mafia Files ( in both the “1958” and “4.35 acdata” folders) are what we’re going with for now.
- For those who have requested the Mafia Files be put into a Github-type format, I’ll just say we’re close. Let’s call that “1-2 Mafia Weeks”

Thank you, Icer, that means a lot. It’s an exciting time for the Mafia, with lots of stuff going on “behind the scenes” (although not really, as you can see it on Discord ". Some good people have “joined the mob”. I don’t want to be presumptuous or jump the gun, but what we’re trying to do now is create the “infrastructure” to produce perfected flight models for all the jets in BMS. We want to do with the “other jets” what the Dev’s did with the Viper.

if you need that i modify the Hornet FLCS (in particular the Gs vs GW laws) you will need to update me

Hi, Mav, and thanks for writing. As stated, we’re in the developmental phase, but we’ll let you know. As always, we’re happy to work with the Dev’s. While we’re here. I have a question . Do you, as an/the original Hornet Dev, also work with the other variants like the EF-18M, and the Rhino/Growler ?
I’m asking to confirm if our original “info highway” ( ie: via BadBoy) is still the way you want to go. Also, I don’t believe you and I have discussed this, but I did explain it to BB. That is, since we don’t know when the Devs may need our stuff, I’ve become very diligent about keeping the Mafia Files (both Mediafire and soon Github) updated. So, our 'latest and greatest" are there. Also, feel free to contact me directly at any time. -

so the work your are doing on a FLCS that is incorrect might need to be redo again.
First, update me with the Rhino FLCS

As stated, we’re still in development, but I’ll pass it along to our Mafia Brain Trust . As for the Rhino, at the moment it’s a little bit on the back burner. We’ve decided to " polish" the Hornet first, although a Growler Project is very much in the works… So, the Rhino to date has mainly been in acdata stuff, which are in the Mafia Files

You should probably reach them there…

Good Day, All,
I haven’t posted an update for awhile, so here goes…
The work mentioned in post 394 is on going. The Growler Project is still on track. As for the flight modeling, Brother TGW has been evaluating different computational fluid dynamics (CFD) programs and we seem to have settled on one. We’re hoping to "get some numbers " soon! -

Can you expand on this a bit – for those of us who haven’t been peeking in on the discord.
It looks/sounds a lot like … you guys are taking virtual 3D models and running them through CFD simulation software, with a goal of generating the “numbers” needed to populate an ‘afm.dat’ flight model for BMS.
If so, that is unbelievably cool – it should win some kind of award for innovation! (Or is this just how flight sims are built, these days… I suppose it’s how modern planes are modelled and flight-tested, before ever being constructed.)
But I’m just connecting dots here. Is that what is happening? Is it an approach that can scale, to generate AFMs for other, non-fbw planes, like F-15 or Mig-29 etc? (Given a bit of knowledge/guesstimate about center-of-gravity, and relative position of onboard fuel tanks etc?)

Indeed that sounds very promising. Having developed CFD code myself some while ago, the problem is that there are still quite some parameters to choose to get a match with reality (dependent on the actual method, for instance, the surface roughness or “stickiness” of the materials). So you typically need some kind of calibration to extract the effective flight model that matches reality best. You could use the F16 flight model as golden standard, calibrate your free parameters such that you recover the F16 flight model and from there you go to the airplanes of interest. Though this only works in case they are similar enough,… Just thinking loud since this sounds really interesting
