You don’t need it for SP, but I strongly urge you to give MP a try. You’re really missing out if you don’t. like most things in life, it’s only half as good on your own.

I only do SP and I don’t use those at all. So I have my Warthog mic switch set up to do common comms…
Up - Q (Awacs) | Declare (Shift)
Fwd - W (Wing) | Request Picture (Shift)
Aft - E (Element) | Nearest Threat (Shift)
Down - R (Flight) | Tower (Shift)
Press - Master Caution | Wing Attack My Target (Shift)But I had to do Q,W,E,R,T in JoyToKey as the native DX method via the Warthog doesn’t turn the menu page for some reason.
As the question was about their function in MP.
I do quite a lot of ramp up of people doing their first multiplayer flights, not having the SimTransmitCom callbacks bound is the most common issue.
Usually in a first rampup for multiplayer you do an IVC check in 2d where the F1 and F2 keys on the keyboard are used to check if the connection and transmission over IVC works at all.
The once in 3d even so the pre IVC check worked they are able to hear other human players but cannot transmit in 99% of the cases due to not having those 2 callbacks bound.Even so someone is not planing to do MP I highly recommend to have them bound as if some ever thinks of joining MP it’s easily forgotten that the binds are missing
Other than that instead of binding any QWERTy/QWERTZ to the HOTAS I would always go with Voice commands instead -

It may have been that your voice software was a problem. I’m single player and use VoiceAttack voice software, https://forum.voiceattack.com/smf/index.php The voice profile I use for VoiceAttack is by @SemlerPDX, https://www.benchmarksims.org/forum/showthread.php?37442-AVCS4-Immersive-Voice-Control-Radios-for-VoiceAttack It is very good.
Here is a single player youTube video I made today for BMS Falcon Training Mission #6 with VoiceAttack and the @SemplerPDX voice profile.
The radio calls to Taegu airport use Push-To-Talk and get BMS Falcon to respond. The other comments I make in the recording are just my way of reminding myself about key points in the ILS landing process. Like @Oakdesign said, “instead of binding any QWERTy/QWERTZ to the HOTAS I would always go with Voice commands instead”As far as the ILS landing goes, it shows that I still need practice :? If anyone sees where I can improve, please respond.

Sure, voice comms can be fun and add to realism. I’ve tried VAC, VoiceAttack and VAICOM in BMS/DCS. For me they don’t always work that well. Perhaps my Asian accent and pronunciation makes it not pick up my voice commands correctly. Though I think the simplicity of VAC is pretty stable and reliable for BMS. I just got a new PC set up so I might use VAC again.

Regardless of the software, if it uses Windows Speech Recognition Engine (and most do), then you would want to run through the Speech Training completely through at least 3 times. This is particularly important for English speakers with strong accents such as those speaking it as a 2nd language, or even those from English speaking countries such as Australia, Ireland, Scotland, or Wales (just to name a few).
In fact, some folks may want to run through Speech Training more, =VG= Kavelenko from Down Under reported good recognition after training it 12 times, or so.
Best wishes and good luck!
Also - (thx @jc1 !) the new link for AVCS4 BMS at this new site:
https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/16233/avcs4-immersive-voice-control-radios-for-voiceattack -
Funny enough I needed to run the English Training 3 times to get a 95% rate where as 8 times with my native German language SR
