Solved Is BMS -Full.key file replaced/overwritten by U3?
-
I usually do a winmerge after applying a BMS Update to keep track which files and folders have been changed with update.
After running U3 I recognized that in User/Config setup.ver which is ok but also BMS- Full.key file have been changed. If the change of the key file was a replacement/overwrite by the U3 installer that might cause issues for every user using the BMS -Full.key and made mapping changes to it as well as all users using AL.Just asking for a Dev confirmation if the BMS - Full.key is indeed part of the U3 installation
-
yes but it was a simply structural typo that was fixed (tab or space removed) so no functional change if i remember well

@bad-boy Sorry to say but overwritting that file without further notice is the same dump move as overwritting the cfg file with U2.
This time not even a notice in the change log.
So all user that use the Full-key and made changes to it as well as all AL users and havent backed up their Config folder might be affected by that -
@oakdesign you are right we forget to notify this file was changed (to be honest i completely forget about this “very little” modification)
Apologies to everybody

I would emphasize on the fact that it is much needed to use a custom key file…
@chihirobelmo , this is an example where playing with stock BMS file through Alternative Launcher creates issues…
Maybe you should copy it and work on a separate file to avoid such situation?Cheers

@maxwaldorf Just spoke to chili on discord. AL users seem not to be affedted as AL is recreating the BMS -Full.key file on launch and publishing the user made binds from the AL xml files.
So only users that made changes through BMS UI or manually are affected. But still if you use BMS UI the BMS - Full.key file is used as default and not every users saves changes made to it as own key file, but might just make changes through BMS UI and hit apply the to the Default file.
And I just want to emphazise my statement I made during the cfg file replacement made with U2 that if changes to files that are intented to be changed by the user need to be adopted, there are way smarter methods to intruduce such changes than a copy replace, especially as we are talking about replacing a single tab by a whitespace
-
@oakdesign HOTAS bindings by AL are not affected, changes to the default keyboard bindings are
-
This is why you never edit the default file. You always make a copy uniquely named, e.g. xXx_VagDestroyer_xXx v3.key.
-
@frederf nor are you forced to save to another filename, nor does the manual suggest to do so.
Manual tells you might if you want to.
Beeing a software dev myself I just see it from the POV of a DAU.
And if you follow the Manual the save function is last in order after the user might have already been used to just use the APPLY button to save to the default key file loaded without even seeing the need to save to a renamed file. -
Ice’s Helios Profile full key just got fragged!
My fault, should have backed up, but in my excitement…
@oakdesign, I hereby apply for DAU in Chief

There goes RTTClient.ini, another one bites the dust.
Do like me, back-up of everything that is not Add-On theaters before any update. Then compare and correct.
-
@lorikeolmin I completely forgot to run the winmerge on the Tools folder as well
-
@lorikeolmin @oakdesign @Bad-Boy
Yep, U3 installation wiped out my RTTClient.ini too.Thankfully, I did have backups saved (by past planning when I figured out all my RTTClient settings when first setting up the MFDs). I backed up everything in User/Config and Docs before installing U3, but forgot to back up tools! Thank heavens I saved my corrections in archive earlier.
That was the only installation glitch I saw (aside from forgetting to run the install in Administrator mode - foolish Windows 10 “Defender” - defending me against myself again…
Regards,

Sorry for the overwrites, folks
-
@seifer
No issues, Seifer! You guys have done a marvelous job on this update, from what I have seen so far. Smooth installation too. Thanks for all your hard work, and the BMS team. -
@seifer Back up is the usual saviour, I restored in second. User caution, no harm to apply. Don’t be sorry for that.
-
It should be second nature to backup critical files… No need to tell you each and every update
-
@seifer said in Is BMS -Full.key file replaced/overwritten by U3?:
Sorry for the overwrites, folks
Seifer , Bad Boy … please … DO NOT APOLOGIZE GUYS !!!
Seriously!!!
We are spending nights and days working on something free then offer it with absolutely no counterpart. If some ppl are unreleased by what we are providing, they can either stay on previous version and take no ricks … or … whatever … not our concerns.
We are not obliged to publish change-logs. We are even not obliged to publish the updates.
The only thing they can say is “Be careful, I’ve noticed that … etc …” and / or … “Thank you”. That’s all.Personally, before installing something, I make a save. This is basics.
Hey … Where are we!?! Seifer, Bad Boy … when was the last time you’ve enjoyed the game while some other only complains … ? … They just owe you a big thanks.
