Night Flying & Situational Awareness
-
Hello,
Any tips for flying at night with no moon and/or in clouds? The following are the challenges:
-
FLIR: Only looks out in front and useless in clouds; can the real one look through clouds?
-
Targeting Pods: Useless in clouds; can the real one look through clouds?
-
Formation: I have my flight fly in Trail Formation since I can’t see them anyway; is that the strategy in real life?
-
Datalink: “Cont” does help but every now and then they disappear until the next “Cont” round.
-
Tacan: Set my A/A Tacan to Wingman’s frequency; somewhat helpful but would have to keep switching to the element’s frequency the find them.
-
Night Vision Goggles: Useless in clouds or moonless nights; no tanker obviously.
-
Combat: BVR Only & GPS weapons only.
Thank you

- No
- No
- Mission dependent
- Talk to them on U6
- Why are you worried they are AI’s - they will stick to you like glue unless you tell them otherwise.
- NVG cant see through clouds but you can tank with them on … but its not easy ;0)
- Good idea.

That’s how it works.

A bit dangerous when you are over enemy territory

A great read”Vipers in the Storm” , I read it for the second time and reached out to Keith for a few questions.
- They never flew tactical spreads, only trail about 8 miles
- The FLIR is how they would see the Tanker as they came up to it
Now at that time they did not have NVG
I’m reading Dan Hampton “Viper Pilot” now and this is a good read also.

Re: trail at 8 miles - this is something I would LOVE to see implemented (ability to direct a distance between aircraft for certain formations). I know you can use “kick out” to achieve some separation, but it is unclear how far the AI will go on each use of “Kick Out”.

BMS Comms Nav Manual p.39Kickout: distance is increased by a factor of 2

Factor of 2 what? Ft, KM, NM? I assume NM, but it`s not written.
So to get 8 miles, you have to press kickout 4 times? -
Related to your questions… here’s a real world night flying spatial disorientation story.
Night flying, over water, scary stuff…

So to get 8 miles, you have to press kickout 4 times?Unit doesn’t matter. It’s facor 2 of the current distance.
Example 4 ship Flight order to trail default deistance will be approx 0.8NM or 5000ft or 1.5 km
On kickout AI will extend to 1.6NM 10000ft 3.0km on next kickout 3.2NM 20000ft 6 km.Default distances can be retrieved from the same manual.
More practical just setup A-A Tacan to you wingman and as simple as that the distance you get on the DED hit kickout and it will be twice as much same goes for Close up where the current distance will be divided by 2 -
On the rear of the fairing for the position lights on the inlets are two small IR emitters and on the rear ECM housing are two more…
Besides, when you look at the manual, there are many more! ideal for holding the flight formation…
in the current BMS, The COVERT options (IR) are not implemented…An excellent idea of enhancement

@oakdesign Very informative, thanks!
