HUD symbology layout comparison with the real jet

@jstnj
). It is not related to RCS settings as far as I know and fiddling with those does not change anything in the sim, either.
Thanks for the response!
The diameter of ASEC changes based on several data when a bugged target is present. However, it is fixed at max. radius when there is none, which is the case here in the source video (Yeah I couldn’t remember and I’m not near my PC now…thanks for confirming!

The ASEC is 6 degrees below the gun cross in both.
ASEC radius varies between F-16s. In one source I have a 12-56mr maximum (AIM-120A) and in another I have 20-60mr (AIM-120B). It stands to reason the circle might get a little bigger in later AIM-120 variants. One can presumably scale the BMS one off a known artifact like the 5 degree pitch ladder.
They do fiddle with the sizes and placement of things from time to time.An overlay of different fixed symbology from various sources would be interesting.
Ugh I hate this forum software. I can’t compose a response and look at the post at the same time.

(Focus on the centerpoint / crosshair of the circle, relative to the airspeed/altimeter indicators – I think you’re right, too low … or the speed/alt indicators are too high?)
But this seems like something that could vary, depending on block … or software (tape) update.
Do we know which block, and what year that HUD image was captured?

Slightly related question: what’s the “JACBUL” and “VAQUEROS” on the DED? Preset frequency names? Would there be a use for that in Falcon BMS?
-
@airtex2019 It is most likely a blk40 or blk50 jet as the Auto GCAS is reportedly not compatible with the analog FLCS which was found on the earlier blocks.
The date of the incident is May 5th, 2016.

JACBUL looks like the pre-assigned name for STPT 6 for this specific sortie. It might be some kind of abbreviation that could help the pilot distinguish between steerpoints.
VAQUEROS might be related to the selected VHF channel but that’s only my guess.

Could be the same exact thing as it is for the STP/bulls selected, some abreviation of the current Channel he is so i might assume that he is part of “Las Vaqueros” 152nd sq maybe…

Yes, the jet is from the 152nd Fighter Squadron indeed.

I have nothing to add except that I am aware that there are multiple variants on the HUD symbology that are dependent on block type and software revisions. It may well be that some representations are exact to the genuine article, while others might be slightly inaccurate. And how would I even know, anyway? I’d never think to criticize a minor error regarding such things, considering the complexity of the task and how hard the dev team has worked to make it as good as it is.
I truly don’t know where the dev team gets all its detailed data or how they manage it all but I have to say, I’m continually impressed.
-
@buzzbomb why would you take this as (bad) critism? isn’t realism something we all look for in bms? i believe this type of feedback is one of the ways to improve the sim. i am well aware that it is a minor thing but so is the font used on the MFDs. nevertheless, they were edited to be visually closer to the real thing with the update from 4.34 to 4.35. i just wanted to bring this to the devs’ attention hoping that this is something that can be tweaked easily. if not, i will still be happy with what i have anyway.
-
Speaking for myself, I am ok with BMS having minor deviations in layout and composition of the HUD / MFDs in order to keep things readable on a 1080p computer monitor.
Config-file variables may have a further role to play for this kind of thing… for those with 4k or 8k monitors.

There are indeed some differences, these are deep in the code but I’ll give it a look. Do note that ASEC is where it should be (use gun cross as reference), but it seems the speed and alt-tapes should be a bit further outward and lower, and the bearing tape a bit lower
-
I think somebody misread my previous comment. I’m not criticizing AT ALL. If there are minor deviations from perfection, I’d never know and to me all the HUD symbology work that has gone into this is simply incredible.
I would not be in a position to offer any criticism even if I wanted to because I don’t have any real world F-16 experience of my own to draw on. Of course, I wish I did…
