Solved Bit Torrent Needed to Install BMS?
-

Re: BMS Base Installer question

I haven’t visited FalconBMS in a couple of years. Decided to try to get back onto it with my son. Came here to download it and find out the “default” download requires a torrent client? The download page shows the checksum of the standard .ZIP file (2.32GB for the base install), I assume it is the “Magnet” version??? They could do a better job of explaining what “Magnet” is in the first place. Frankly, if a bit torrent client is need to install, then after using Falcon 4.0 and BMS over the years since 1998, I am done with BMS, there is no need to make getting the .EXE a chore…

I strongly suggest qBitTorrent and getting used to torrents in general - not all torrent clients are bad - but totally understand that some people have had such negative experiences in the past that regardless of any assurances, torrents are just a no-go for them.

Since we are not allowed to host public mirrors for direct download, I can only offer that if anyone is truly facing a barrier to entry in BMS related to downloading the setup files, I can privately share the files (not torrents; full files) from my communities website CDN. Only rules are you have to contact me via DM/PM, and then you cannot share the link(s) I provide publicly with anyone such as on reddit, discord, etc…

Trying hard not to break the rules here, so if even this post is not allowed, please let me know and/or delete it and I won’t make such offers again. Just want to help, and I happen to have all versions of BMS back to 4.33 available on my groups website yet 4.35+updates is simply not allows in public mirrors.

@trance_factor seems like a weird hill to die on… but alright.

Distributing via torrents is cost effective, secure, fast and easy.

@trance_factor
I see this discussed over, over and over again. I.E. just recently on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/falconbms/comments/t1529p/best_way_to_download_bms_435/
It seems this question never dies, but why is this such a big deal for some people?

Download “qBitTorrent”, which is open-source. (So you don’t run into the risk that your GPU is doing some crypto-mining in the background while downloading…)

Install the best modern era, (F-16) fighter pilot sim out there (to be fair, there is no alternative out there anyway so…)

Happy flying

Use qBittorrent and I promise it won’t make you download pirate software…

-

@Zero900 I’m more of a Transmission man myself

-

@trance_factor If you play BMS I’m sure you can take 5min to learn how torrents work

-

@WurminatorZA Yeah, it boggles the mind that people who can get to grips with running and flying BMS can’t figure out torrents.

-

+1 for transmission from me as well!

Cheers, Uwe

-

@hoover Is the windows version operating without issues? I see it’s an “early preview”. Used it on my linux systems, no issues there.

edit: well, with qbit apparently crashing lately, might as well give it a try…

-

No issues to report here with transmission on both platforms (Linux & win10)

All the best, Uwe

@WurminatorZA Yeah, it boggles the mind that people who can get to grips with running and flying BMS can’t figure out torrents.

While I do think that is obviously a thing as OP posted, I think that the more common problem here is people thinking torrents by default are bad since a lot of pirated stuff is torrents. But I do think even a simple explanation by the links explaining the reason of saving bandwidth fees and that truly BMS is safe to download this way would help with that misconception.

I also get on the other side of the complaint that you are saying that most of us are techies to a basic level to be into PC military flight sims. OTOH, recently I had to download a Python app and set in my ways me almost gave up and was angry that the guy just didn’t have it complied already in the first place. So I get the sentiment to an extent. But we all know ultimately it’s worth it (as it actually was for that app too)!

I also - on principal - REFUSE to use a torrent to download BMS…!!

I refuse to use bit torrent to download anything for which I do not have to pay…!!

Ara Privateer Gorn

I also - on principal - REFUSE to use a torrent to download BMS…!!

I refuse to use bit torrent to download anything for which I do not have to pay…!!

Sorry Aragorn, but that makes absolutely no sense in my book. This sounds like refusing to ever use a phone because the “bad folks” use it too to organize nasty things at times

Bittorrent is a protocol, nothing more. A very helpful & useful protocol to be sure, to provide quick and easy distribution to such nice things as free Linux distros, Libreoffice productivity suites and more.

What’s stroking you the wrong way about a protocol? I can understand you don’t like taking risks with a possible malware installation that all those fools run into who install torrent clients from untrusted sources, but that’s not an issue with the truly open-source, multi platform tools like transmission.

All the best, Uwe

@Aragorn
you dont trust torrent client or bms?

if you had to pay you would use torrent client?

i dont understand

@Aragorn That’s funny. I’m the exact opposite of you. I use torrents exclusively for everything I don’t pay for.
