Maverick training mission 14 difficulties
-

Hi everyone!

So, my main issue is that I can’t destroy both zsu23 in one pass. No matter how high or low I fly, the handoff process from tge tgp takes very long and I’m only able ti shoot one of them. Is there something I’m missing? I’ve read the theory and I’m familiar with the concept of keyhole, but I can’t do it in a single pass.
How do you go about this mission?
Does speed matter? Do trees obscure the tgp los?

-

@didimos only general Cloud and colonel Fog can give you the answer…

-

Did you boresight on the boat over the sea before?

You need to make sure your mavericks are ready (3min…)

-

@MaxWaldorf

Yes, i follow every step as it is outlined in the manual. I’ce sucesfully boresighted the missiles. I am aware that under bad weather(clouds, fog) it would take longer for the handoff to complete because of the ir missiles, but I think it’s too much. I only did it once and it kind of felt random… Hitting the 2 in one pass I mean .

@Foxtrot701
Yeah, i know but it is all around.

-

@didimos
Can you confirm that your maverick weapon cam is in narrow field (zoom) mode?

-

@Amadeus75

I always set the WPN FOV to narrow when I uncage the missiles. Of course I will pay attention to this too. Thanks though.

-

To be honest, the mission is very hard even for experienced virtual pilots…

I don’t think you can get it in one time ;)

-

@MaxWaldorf

Thing is I’m too stubborn, lol. I’ll try to figure out a way.

-

@didimos handoff process not take time, it take distance. u must get close enough to let the maverick optical sensor get a clear image, usually it is 15-10nm.

-

@Gear5

The problem is that the handoff is complete when I get like 3 NM from the target, so it is too late for the second one. In the previous training mission 13 it didn’t take long, this is why I attribute it to the bad weather in missoon 14.

-

@didimos It has been discussed many times in these forums since the new weather effects were introduced. In such conditions (fog, mist, smoke) the 65 would probably not be the best choice to employ to the battlefield. I’ve always recommended to use this mission just as a training tool for the TFR. Stick with the clear weather for learning Mav’s and boresighting…

@didimos I was exactly where you are 3-4 days ago. Very difficult mission. I failed countless of times, even with freeze pause, while handling the Mav targeting. The handoff just did not complete. I also tried Vis and Bore that needs no TGP but nothing, the Mavs just could not lock on even from 4-5 Nm distances, while I was at LOW LEVEL flight. The only solution for me was to risk go a bit higher, then BAM, I could get a lock from 8-9 Nm on all modes Pre, Vis and Bore, sayonara Zsu’s a few seconds later BAM a ManPad got me because I was foolish enough to turn to the left right into the enemy hahaha. But I did it again this time with no freeze and dived immediately to the right with full flares blazing, to avoid flying over the ground units. It really felt like while I was at freeze the AI was working so they fired that manpad on my first pass. That did not happen on my previous failed attempts first passes, only when I came around a second time.

Edit : I also noticed that while on Vis mode the little circle on the HUD that point to where the Mav is tracking was not aligned with the Mav camera. E.g. I placed the camera exactly over one of the zsu but the circle was lower and to the right of that unit.

Yes, In BMS 4.32 and 4.33, Handoff complete at 7nm. But in 4.34 and 4.35, I cannot finish the handoff.

-

yes, it’s very hard due to the missile having trouble in fog and cloud (newly implemented). This I heard is a problem in real the Maverick, and forces BMS players to pay attention to the weather briefing when deciding on weapon loadout or even scrub a mission if atmospheric conditions are not favorable

@danaos75

Glad you did it my friend. Thank you for your info.

It is super hard… not impossible, but probably not reasonable tactics. It just makes a fun, quick, “super hard-mode” challenge.

My tips …
1. set your HSI course indicator to preferred attack vector (perpendicular to the column, to minimize manpad exposure).

2. get TGP capture on the shilkas… set precision markpoints. fly a ~7nm circle around the target area … like a shark … keep checking (visual and tgp) for a break in the clouds, especially as you approach your preferred attack vectors … fine-tune that HSI course vector, based any gaps in the tree coverage … or the targets’ position relative to the tall building.

3. with jammer on, and a good flare program enabled … turn in. you’ll be about 5nm range when you’re nose hot so you only have a few seconds to get lock and fire (or abort) before needing to turn away to avoid the stream of bullets

Btw, I can highly recommend this variant of the bad-weather Mav training mission. @AWmk1 did a great job in setting up a scenario with similarly poor weather, but the best part is the detailed tutorial/training description on how a pilot should approach a scenario like this:

https://forum.falcon-bms.com/topic/21427/maverick-14-bad-weather-training-modified?=1649175421523

@airtex2019

Thanks for the advice! Never actually thought of using the hsi in such situations. Interesting.
