Solved Smart Scaling settings in 4K
-
I’m not sure if it’s just me not being used to it or my new-ness in returning to the sim. My main screen is a 55" 4K OLED and I’m still currently flying with default settings and Smart Scaling on. When joining for an A-A refuel using the TEs, I feel like I’m speeding up to catch up with the tanker and at 400+knots IAS, it looks like I’m not gaining on the tanker because it is still the same size, then after a while, it grows really big really fast.
I presume the initial “not gaining on him” is because although I am closing the distance, smart scaling keeps him at the same size until I reach a certain point/distance where smart scaling turns off and he starts getting bigger and bigger and I finally get a more accurate sense of our rate of closure.
Does anyone else have this problem and can perhaps suggest a few settings to try in smart scaling to make this much easier or feel more natural? I don’t really want to turn off smart scaling as I feel it does help out when spotting distant targets but obviously here it presents an issue when judging the rate of rejoin/closure and getting a feel for when to adjust my own speed.
Cheers!

@Atlas My tips …
-
approach at an offset … eg. 500 ft off the left wing. so you can get a sense of the tanker moving “backward” in your fov as you approach
-
set g_fSmartScalingThreshold 3.0 //nautical miles
the idea here is to have things scale smoothly, within gun range (~3.0 nm) and also for flying formations, overhead-break and carrier landing patterns etc

That is the best advice anybody can give except turning SM off.

Thanks a lot for this hint, dear mate - this has to be put in that “Falcon BMS User.cfg” file only, right?
It may be obvius, but you know as they say: “Better safe than sorry”.With best regards.

Thanks both for this! Yes, I do not want to turn of Smart Scaling but I think it just doesn’t “deactivate” until I’m too close. I’ll try 3.0 and see how it feels. The default 1.0 is just too crazy! -

3.0 seems like a sweet spot, I was better able to judge closure and slow down accordingly!
