AV-8B Carrier operations
-
@Le_Beau egen On land based operations the problem is not there.
-
@Kavelenko - I worked on RL Harriers for four years. I know them inside and out. If a BMS Harrier has a hook, they are 110%, dead WRONG.
-
@Kavelenko @Stevie I think they only have “hooks” for the AI since it can’t do a vertical landing.
-
@unkindled Have any of you guys actually tried to land a Harrier on the WASP with a hook in 4.36? Please check it out first before saying it cannot be done. It may not be correct in RL but it can be done in BMS.
-
@unkindled - as far as I know an LHA dosen’t have arresting gear, so nothing but Harriers and helos should be able to land on them…I think…
-
@Stevie Are you referring to RL? I’m not disputing that but you can actually drop the hook and catch the Harrier with the arresting gear on the WASP in BMS 4.36.
Why bother if you can vertically land it right? But it is possible in BMS.
I have not tried it with another jet e.g. FA-18.
-
@Stevie Yup, it doesn’t. But iirc I’ve read in the documentation that in BMS it only has arresting wires and the Harrier has a “hook” so that the AI can land. As they can only land conventionally and not vertically.
-
@Kavelenko Never said it cannot be done. Just that you’re not expected to do so because the hook isn’t there for the player, but for the AI.
-
Guys, easy on the stick.
Yes player’s Harrier can land VTOL , AI can not, so it use “invisible” hook.
Even player can use that invisible hook , just use keyboard to activate , … no point if you’re landing VTOL., BUT!, not recommended when landing VTOL as the hook will latch to wire and pull plane backwards - possibly KIA.Yes, there’s still that problem of plane “jumping” forward on touchdown even if moving exactly 0kts relative to WASP speed. - it is an old problem (not bug?) of BMS 4.35 - but it wasn’t in 4.34 and lower. - reason - unknown - maybe surface, fm.dat - anti skid code? - carrier landing code?
(that’s why it is called JUMP-JET , duh )- btw, todo , try landing on Roosevelt and/or Enterprise, different type carrier , see if only wasp problem, see if she “jumps” forward there …
Suggest “simulate” rev-thrust with nozzles full front , activate parking brake on touchdown, if using pedals , consider braking very early, - it happens all very quickly - but you will stop somewhere around bridge if landed on stern spot 8/7/6, - sorry , for now just this workaround - until that is resolved some day.
- er, why not open a bug ticket, eh? - to give them something to work on
-
@Kavelenko - yes. I always reference RL. This is supposed to be a sim, not a game…
-
Little off-topic : I am so happy to see people playing with my Wasp class !!!
-
Thank you all for you comments, this is what makes BMS so great. And a extra thank you to Radium for the Wasp carrier!
Tested to land on the other carriers and the same thing hapends . Forward motion when wheels hit the ground and the reverse when doing a vertical takeoff. Not happening on land based operations.
Is it possible to stop the movement of the carrier? Would be interesting to see if that could be the problem. -

There was a config entry that we put in that stopped the carrier, and it solved that problem. I’m curious if that would help with this issue. It may have been 4.34 because I can’t find it in either the 35 or 36 config. Perhaps someone still has it
Radium, I use the Wasp all the time. Not only have I been doing testing both the Harrier and the F-35B, but it’s in my new campaign
-
@drtbkj Then, I have a question ! What do you think of runway lights. Should I modify them ? I feel they are too brighty and flashy.
-
@Radium I think the runway lights are critical for night operations or inclement weather situations, you can barely see them from 4 Nm out, if its possible to adjust the brightness according to ambient lighting that would be nice, otherwise its good as it is imo.
Radium are you aware that the trigger point for ATC/LSO operations on the Wasp has moved to position 5 on the deck? it was position 6 in 4.35.3
-
@Radium I’m so thankful for everything you do, your models are fantastic. Finally getting the Wasp in BMS was so exciting. It looks great and works great too.
-
@Radium They may seem a bit bright on deck, but like I agree with Kavelenko that they come in handy when landing, especially in weather.
Mange, getting back to your original question, a friend of mine has provided the Config entry to make the carrier stationary. It is set g_bMPMovingCarriers 1. Set it to zero for stationary. Keep in mind that this was a 4.34 config, we don’t know if it will work in 4.36 -
@drtbkj Great, thank you! I will try that.
-
@drtbkj … but kinda LOL I guess … a whole decade was dedicated to make possible having moving carriers in MP … now ya’ll want to make them stationery again , even in SP
Personally, I wouldn’t go that far, as I’ve learned to cope with “jumpjet” (bug) problem, bit scary, but doable, just don’t land at the first half of the Wasp, there’s plenty of room to stop the Harrier on deck
Just my 2 kopeyke

@white_fang Found an interesting comment on quora related to landing the Harrier that got me thinking and now I’m landing it with very little roll. I didnt think it would make much difference actually but here it is:
